Nigeria's Doom: "The Curse of Political Patronage: How Nigeria's Elites Sustain Corruption and Inequality" is a gripping exploration of the entrenched systems of corruption and inequality that have plagued Nigeria's political landscape for decades. Authored by a seasoned observer of Nigerian politics, this book offers a penetrating analysis of the corrosive influence of political patronage on the country's democratic institutions and social fabric. From the halls of power in Abuja to the grassroots communities across the nation, political patronage has permeated every aspect of Nigerian society, perpetuating a cycle of corruption, cronyism, and nepotism that stifles economic growth and undermines the rule of law. Through meticulously researched case studies and incisive commentary, the author shines a light on the mechanisms through which Nigeria's elites exploit their positions of power to enrich themselves at the expense of the wider population. Drawing on insights from interviews with politicians, activists, and ordinary citizens, Nigeria's Doom offers a nuanced portrayal of the complex interplay between politics, economics, and social justice in Africa's most populous nation. From the embezzlement of public funds to the manipulation of electoral processes, the book exposes the myriad ways in which political patronage perpetuates a culture of impunity and fosters a sense of disillusionment and despair among Nigeria's marginalized communities. Despite the grim picture it paints, Nigeria's Doom also offers a glimmer of hope, highlighting the resilience of Nigeria's civil society and the potential for grassroots movements to effect meaningful change. By confronting the scourge of political patronage head-on, the book argues, Nigeria can begin to break free from the shackles of corruption and inequality and build a more just and prosperous future for all its citizens.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2023 in the subject Gender Studies, University of Pretoria, language: English, abstract: This study explores the indicators that outline the oppression, exclusion and subjugation of Nigerian women in the contemporary world. The study analyses the impacts such as the Nigerian laws, the notion that Nigeria retains a patriarchal social structure, Nigerian politics, and of course most importantly, Nigeria’s economy. The study employs the theoretical framework of the "Black Feminist Theory", which in a nutshell can be described as a sociopolitical and economic perspective that acknowledges the perpetuation of the dominance of Patriarchy in the 21st Century; it is a critical theory, advocating for the dismantling of gender bias categorizations and dichotomies that attribute females with inferior qualities as opposed to their male counterparts. This theory is suitable for the study as it provides a lens with which to analyse and frame the research within a specific boundary that can be managed with relevant discourse; the theoretical framework assists the study with a useful vocabulary to unpack the phenomenon it wishes to investigate. The study is an extended literature review, sourcing information from online journal articles, library, online articles from organizations, archives, and newsletters; therefore the article is heavily reliant on secondary accessible data. The study employs a qualitative research design, as it deals with unpacking concepts, exploring experiences of individuals in a social environment and dealing with data that is subject to interpretation.

Sadly, many people become rich by creating problems. It should be the other way round, solving problems. Grand corruption resulting in 'state capture' increases the vulnerability of citizens and inflicts the most pain on the population. Corruption is the single most important threat to Domestic Policies in Nigeria. It distorts the evidence base and misinforms legislations, policies, regulations, programmes, projects and the activities that drive them. It compromises the impact of social interventions; confusing markets; and business environment. It weakens social, economic, political and environmental systems and leaves Nigerians and Nigeria weak. Corruption is the Master Problem, fuelled by excessive greed, patronage and loyalty networks operating at the expense of national interest. This book proposes the Triple Lock against corruption, contributing new perspectives to addressing fundamental structural deficits that provide the incentives, motivations and opportunities to express corrupt behaviour. Nigeria requires a systematic, holistic and integrated approach to radically reduce the corruption burden that drags Nigeria back. With a large population of young people and huge natural capital, Nigeria potentially has unique assets and opportunities to build a fairer and more progressive country and to tap into the hardwork, ingenuity and resilience of its diverse population. But Nigeria will have to work differently to realise THE FULL POTENTIAL for which it is capable. Working differently would mean unlocking value chains currently locked-in in all the sectors of the Nigerian economy, to improve quality and drive demand and supply of locally made goods and services; promoting enterprise; creating decent jobs; pursuing progressive taxation policies; and building a self-sustaining country that can pay its way and voice its own worldview. The possibilities are enormous, but first, Nigeria needs a smarter government and governance intelligence that knows every Nigerian to invest in them as most important assets; drive efficiency and innovation; operating transparent and accountable systems; joining up government and reducing silo-vertical working that promotes opacities; removing bottlenecks that stifle creativity and ideas to markets; reducing inequalities and inequities; ensuring social justice and solidarity; and enabling the best of Nigeria to emerge and to altogether, thrive. This is the big challenge right now, to define the future!

Extrait de la préface : "There has been persistent hue and cry over the years for the emancipation of women from the shackles of male domination. The rights of the Nigerian woman have been subsumed and suppressed by gender arrogance couched in the garb of religion and culture. The relegation of women has also received further impetus from legislative and judicial pronouncements that tend to perpetuate male domination ; a situation worsened by colonialism. In this book, the status of women insouth-western Nigeria is looked at from a legal perspective. This study is based on the premise that huge disparity in the socio-economic development of the women in south-western Nigeria is a consequence of inadequate legal protection."

This research work is aimed at answering the questions of why the increasing inequality, crime rate and poverty in Nigeria. Two models were formulated addressing the dependent variables - inequality and crime rate. It employed the ordinary least square (OLS) method approach to analyse the variables of interest. The results indicate that human development index increased inequality by 6.522725 units, reduced crime rate by 0.137081 units respectively while crime rate and poverty reduced inequality by 2.919025 and 1.218252units respectively. Also it is found that human development index, poverty and inequality all reduced crime rate by 0.37081units, 0.161007units and 0.098731units respectively. It is therefore evident from the study that government should therefore tame corruption and increase palliatives that reduces unemployment hence poverty.
