The increase in the requirements of safety and reliability demanded from the normalization institutes by the issue of normalizing standards, led to the need of the development of materials of superior properties. Owing to the development of metallurgy, the development of materials with extremely high values of strength and toughness was made possible. However, employing these materials in industrial applications is limited by the deterioration of their properties after the material is processed using techniques such as welding. To cope with this challenge, several welding process have been developed. One of these processes is the pulse gas metal arc welding (GMAW-P), in which the arc current is periodically pulsed in order to achieve metal transfer and effectively join the material being dealt with, and this decrease the energy input to the base metal. Due to the advance of electronics and transistor technology there are a large number of current pulse profiles commercially available, with different degrees of complexity, designed for specific applications. Determining the balance between the complexity and benefits for the various pulse profiles and process modifications available is the main motivation for the research presented in this thesis. Specifically, the metal transfer of two commercially available current profiles was studied using high-speed imaging and high speed data acquisition of the electrical signal during welding, for different welding conditions. The results showed that the mode of metal transfer differs for the investigated profiles and that for the same pulse profile, as the pulse parameters are modified the metal and heat transfer changes, altering weld bead features such cross-sectional area and penetration.

Pulsed-current is used primarily with the gas tungsten-arc and gas metal-arc welding processes and, to a limited degree, with plasma-arc welding. The pulsed-current arc welding processes employ two levels of welding current instead of the single level that is used conventionally. Welding current is, in effect, switched between a high and a low level to produce a 'pulsating' current or welding arc. Pulsed-current processes offer important advantages, including, among others, improved control of welding heat input rates, reduced distortion of the parts during welding, improved weld quality, and improved control of weld metal deposition in all welding positions. Pulsed-current gas tungsten-arc (PC-GTA) and pulsed-current gas metal-arc (PC-GMA) welding processes have been used for joining a variety of materials, including some that are often considered difficult-to-weld materials. The memorandum reviews the available literature that has been published on pulsed-current arc welding processes. In addition, information was obtained from numerous representatives of pulsed-current equipment manufacturers and users. (Author).

Arc welding is one of the key processes in industrial manufacturing, with welders using two types of processes - gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). This new book provides a survey-oriented account of the modeling, sensing, and automatic control of the GMAW process.Researchers are presented with the most recent information in the areas of modeling, sensing and automatic control of the GMAW process, collecting a number of original research results on the topic from the authors and colleagues. Providing an overview of a variety of topics, this book looks at the classification of various welding processes; the modeling aspects of GMAW; physics of welding; metal transfer characteristics; weld pool geometry; process voltages and variables; power supplies; sensing (sensors for arc length, weld penetration control, weld pool geometry, using optical and intelligent sensors); control techniques of PI, PID, multivariable control, adaptive control, and intelligent control. Finally, the book illustrates a case study presented by the authors and their students at Idaho State University, in collaboration with researchers at the Idaho National Engineering and Environment Laboratory.

For the economical construction of offshore structures and pipelines, a clear need exists for welding processes which are capable of depositing weld metal of high integrity and toughness, and which offer significantly improved productivity, relative to the conventional, shielded metal arc welding process. This report examines the potential of pulsed gas metal arc welding (GMAW) for these applications. The report describes a study of the influence of shielding gas composition on pulsed GMAW characteristics and weld metal mechanical properties to determine the optimum gas mixures for the pulsed GMAW of structural and pipeline steels for offshore oil and gas installations. Preferred oxygen potential was determined through an investigation of the effect of variations in CO2 content of Ar-CO2 gas mixtures on weld metal properties. Maintaining the oxygen potential constant for each welding application, the effect of additions of He and H2 and variations in CO2 and O2 content on arc stability and metal transfer and on penetration and fusion characteristics were investigated.
