Los que desayunaron ese d a leyendo el diario franc?'s "Le Monde," supieron que hab an nacido dos beb?'s por ovocitos congelados, y recibieron un alerta por una supuesta vacuna contra la coca na. Los brit nicos, en cambio, ese d a comentaban preocupados la nota de "The Times," sobre el riesgo de ser atendidos por un m dico residente, mientras que los brasile os, se informaron por medio del "Folha de S o Paulo" que hab a una nueva t cnica no invasiva para el diagn stico de c ncer labial, y nuevas reglas para reducir el riesgo card aco de la quimioterapia. Si adem?'s del diario, le an una revista de econom a, llamada "Exame," tomaban conocimiento de la existencia de sensores que, ligados al Smartphone y a internet, estaban revolucionando el cuidado de la salud. A los argentinos, la revista Noticias les informaba esa semana del grave problema de los Trastornos Generalizados del Desarrollo (TGD) en ni os. Y ese jueves fue un d a normal para los medios. Porque para delicia no s lo de los hipocondr acos, la informaci n de salud hoy es omnipresente. La situaci n actual de la prensa de salud es el punto culminante de una evoluci n muy r pida y que todav a contin a en proceso de cambios. Fue en el a o 1978, cuando el diario "The NewYork Times" cre una secci n de ciencia, el primer suplemento donde se inclu an espec ficamente noticias relacionadas con los avances m dicos. Esta idea se globaliz y empezaron a surgir en los peri dicos de todo el mundo p ginas especializadas semanales donde, con un tiempo, espacio y dosis de reflexi n mayor al habitual, m dicos y periodistas abordaban temas de salud. El xito fue el esperado en t rminos de lectores, pero no de publicidad, por lo que lentamente fueron desapareciendo. Atendiendo los deseos de los clientes, el cuidado de la salud, ya ten a su espacio ganado. En las tapas, y las secciones de sociedad o informaci n general de diarios, revistas y programas de televisi n. Es en ese terreno donde a o tras a o aumenta el n mero de notas relacionadas con la salud. O m?'s espec ficamente, con su falta. El inter?'s de los lectores en la medicina no hace sino reflejar un cambio de actitud en la que los pacientes se hacen cargo de su propia salud y buscan informaci n en todas las fuentes posibles. Sin embargo, tal vez por la propia juventud del periodismo de salud, muchos factores atentan contra la calidad: la l nea editorial que muchas veces tiende hacia el espect culo o la cura milagrosa, el corporativismo y la b squeda desmedida de r dito personal por parte de m dicos e instituciones, la ingenuidad o falta de capacitaci n de algunos periodistas, las presiones de distintos or genes. Esto ocurre en un escenario de mudanzas, donde la imagen de los profesionales de la salud est desgastada, la medicina es vista como m?'s mercantilizada que nunca, hay un crecimiento inesperado d cadas atr?'s de las pseudociencias, con curanderos aggiornados que dominan las t cnicas de comunicaci n de masas, y los ciudadanos dependen y utilizan cada vez m?'s de los medios, incluido Internet, para cuidar de su propia salud.
