PREMIO ANAGRAMA DE ENSAYO 2022 El tráfico de esclavos y la esclavitud misma –la subyugación de sociedades con larga historia y sólidas instituciones– levantaron críticas desde la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Esas impugnaciones nacieron de los ideales igualitarios de la Revolución Francesa y las corrientes religiosas radicales del mundo protestante. A pesar de su arraigo y de los grandes intereses económicos que sostenía, la esclavitud terminó por abolirse en las colonias de Gran Bretaña en 1833, en las de Francia en 1848 y en Estados Unidos en 1865, en lo que constituyó un triunfo moral de los humanitaristas, determinante para la transformación de los grandes imperios de origen europeo. La relación entre las metrópolis liberales y sus colonias fue considerada como la garantía de reforma y mejora de la condición humana. A pesar de ello, la persistencia de formas de trabajo compulsivo, el maltrato a las sociedades aborígenes, amenazadas así de extinción, y el ascenso del racismo y el supremacismo blanco en todo el mundo impulsaron la continuidad de las corrientes humanitaristas y reformistas. La brutalidad del reparto de las tierras y la colonización africana fueron el mayor desafío para los herederos de aquellas añejas tradiciones. Y sin embargo ni las voces disconformes originadas en las metrópolis ni las que surgieron en las mismas colonias proyectaron por aquel entonces un horizonte ideológico alternativo al de los imperios: solo los conflictos nacionales e interimperiales del cambio de siglo, las guerras mundiales (con la participación de reclutas de los territorios coloniales), modificaron ese cuadro. Con el rigor y la minuciosidad que le han valido la autoridad internacional de que goza como historiador, Josep M. Fradera propone en Antes del antiimperialismo una iluminadora genealogía de la crítica que antecede al antiimperialismo propiamente dicho.
