As information service management becomes increasingly critical in the 1980s, its attention is no longer limited to the acquisition, indexing, and storage of documents. Instead, it is taking on an expanded role in the understanding and analysis of economic issues and the management of technological innovation, This collection defines the dimensions of this expanded role and suggests strategies for improved information service management. Three principal areas related to information policy and decision making are covered: economics and government policy, management and marketing of services, and innovations and the impacts of technology. The book provides a practical and comprehensive background and framework for librarians, students of information science, information center managers, and others who are concerned with effective management of information services.

With the rapid growth in computer and communication technology, as well as the ease in disseminating information, library bibliographic control has become difficult, forcing contemporary libraries to make a paradigm shift from the age old traditional library operation to automation with the latest state-of-the-art operations. Such a change has played a key role in increasing, to considerable magnitude, the expectations by library clientele. Information Technology (IT) is the boon of the 21st century, providing quick and easy accessibility. The technological developments in information transfer emphasize the fact that universal availability of information is no longer a utopian concept. The promising and diversified possibilities of IT have reduced the space and time between people, countries, and continents, and have ultimately led to the emerging concept of the 'global village.' The application of IT in library and information services is manifold, and in such a time of rapid development in the field of science and technology, it is impossible to remain untouched or unaffected by it. This book examines the various technologies and identifies the impact of electronic media in modern libraries and information centers.

Computer and communication technology is changing at an increased rate. New technologies are emerging; the price-performance of current technology is improving. There is a need to assess the impact of technology on new information systems project particularly those dealing with distributed processing and electronic office systems. Such as assessment provides direction and guidance in long range and intermediate term information services planning. It can potentially prevent costly conversion efforts. An approach is developed for obtaining this assessment. Two case examples of applications are also provided which illustrate the method, results, and benefits. (Author).
