The 25 papers in this proceedings were presented by national and international information systems experts, development planners, and scholars at a seminar that was jointly sponsored by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development and the city of Kawasaki, Japan. Designed to reach a wider group of interested planning practitioners and information systems specialists, the report begins with two keynote addresses: "Information Technology and Regional Development--Challenges and Opportunities for Developing Countries" (Hidehiko Sazanami); and "Public/Private Partnerships in Information Systems in Public Administration" (Jean V. Salmona). The texts of 22 papers are then presented in five categories: (1) The Challenges of Information Systems Today; (2) Comparative Case Studies of Information Systems Projects; (3) Training in Information Systems; (4) Developing and Implementing Effective Information Systems Strategies; and (5) The Advanced Information City. A synthesis of the findings of research on information systems implementation in developing countries concludes the report. Countries represented in the individual presentations include China, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Thailand. Introductory materials include an annotated listing of the presented papers, and a list of contributors which includes their addresses is attached. (CGD)

Urban planners who need to design information systems require an understanding of systems analysis, data acquisition and GIS. In recent times the need has been to make computer-based maps by using a GIS, but planners now need tools for co-operative work using groupware systems, for global visualization and real-time monitoring of urban activities and phenomena. Planners have moved beyond drawing land use plans, to examining the evolution of urban activities to monitor and analyze urban societal and environmental problems. Both practitioners and students will find this book useful, provided they have an adequate grounding in computing, data analysis and GIS and they are looking to use and design computer systems for developing maps and written statements for city planning. Therefore, novel tools like using multimedia information systems and GIS will become an increasingly important, eventually essential part of the job.

In August 1989, a Summer Institute was held at the Academie van Bouwkunst, the seventeenth century home of Amsterdam's School of Architecture, Town Planning and Landscape. The meeting brought together experts in Geographical Information Systems from throughout the world to address an international audience of planners. The contents of this book reflect many of the themes that were presented and discussed at the conference. The Summer Institute, let alone this volume, would not have been possible without the support of the International Association for the Development and Management of Existing and New Towns (INTNAIVN), the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISoCaRP), The National Physical Planning Agency of the Netherlands (RPD) and the Berlage Studio. We wish to acknowledge the assistance provided by these organisations and by the various sponsors: The Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment, the Municipality of Amsterdam, Logisterion b.v., ESRI, UNISYS, MABON b.v., SPSS, PRIME Computer Inc., PANDATA. The provision of hardware facilities by the various computer companies allowed immensely valuable 'hands on' experience to be gained by all the participants.
