"Direct access to maritime ports for inland navigation vessels generally occurs by using an appropriate system of locks, which gives access to the main port docks with a reasonable variation of the sea water level, necessary for secure navigation and according to the rules of conception of the vessels themselves. In that respect, future ports’ layout requires for new quays or for new terminals a dedicated inland waterways access in order to give to this mass transportation mean the right infrastructure to compete on a fair basis with the other mass transportation means (maritime feeder vessels, railway trains). However, it may occur that the growth of inland vessels traffic is too slow or that urban real estate pressure is too high to allow inland vessels to enter new docks through a dedicated infrastructure when the building of new locks is regarded as too expensive to be realised and is therefore delayed."--Introduction.

Inland & Maritime Waterways & Ports: Design, Construction, and Operation covers the proceedings of the technical sessions in the 25th Permanent International Association of Navigation Congress, held in Scotland. This book is organized into two sections encompassing 10 chapters. The first section deals first with means for the protection of banks and bottom waterways against the attack by currents and waves, including those generated by ships. These topics are followed by discussions on methods of increasing waterways capacity and safety; sedimentation reduction and improving and maintaining navigable depths in alluvial channels; integration of ocean-coastal-inland navigation; and improvements of maritime ports and inland terminals. The second section starts with discussions of the developments in the construction of ships, navigational aids, waterways and harbors, traffic management and installations, with particular emphasis on risk analysis and safety criteria regarding transportation, unloading, and storage of liquefied natural and petroleum gases. "Since the end of the last century, the number and the complexity of navigational and information equipment on inland navigation vessels and for inland navigation infrastructure have increased dramatically. ICT is transforming shipping, bringing enhanced monitoring, communication and connection capabilities and thereby facilitating the development of new generations of intelligent transport systems, including automated inland navigation vessels. According to the Terms of Reference established by the Inland Navigation Commission of PIANC (InCom) for Task Group 204 (TG 204) on 18 September 2017, this awareness paper provides an overview and stimulates feedback on the cyberrisks for inland navigation including its infrastructure, and on mitigating measures, taking into account work in neighbouring fields, such as maritime transport and ports management. The pursued objective is to raise awareness for cybersecurity in inland navigation among practitioners in the management of inland waterways, ports, as well as shipping companies. This paper also contains some recommendations for follow-up of these activities under the umbrella of PIANC."--Abstract.
