This sourcebook introduces the basic concept of college in prison, describes programs that exist across the country today, and considers the challenges and opportunities facing community college educators who are interested in the growing movement to reintroduce postsecondary education to America’s prisons. Not only do the authors write from their personal experience as educators, they also expound on many issues that arise in prison teaching, including: the clash between college assumptions and prison rules, the complete absence of public funding for college in prison, the racial dimension of mass incarceration, and insights on key issues facing college educators in the prison context today. This is the 170th volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission.

A Proven Criminal Justice Model Direct and powerful prisoner testimonies by successful graduates of College Education Behind Bars (CEBB) breathe undeniable life into this remarkable story about the power of hope and the possibility of redemption. Confronted with an overcrowded jail overflowing with hopeless brothers and sisters, Dr. Aland Mizell conceived of CEBB as a light to shine into darkness. Making that light a reality required to seek out and create effective partnerships with government officials, criminal justice agencies, and forward-thinking university administrators. CEBB's academic courses and mandatory recovery program offer prisoners a realistic hope for transforming themselves into productive members of their families and communities, heightening success at reentry and lowering the chance of recidivism. The author calls for replication of this academic and rehabilitative initiative across the Philippines and the passage of a a Second Chance Act. "College Education Behind Bars is a symbol of hope in the era of mass incarceration. Through this innovative higher education program, Dr. Aland Mizell offers purpose to PDL, preparing them for release and demonstrating that education that should be available even to those behind bars - it's a gateway for second chances especially for those desiring a better future." Dr. J. Prospero "Popoy" de Vera III, Chairman, Commission on Higher Education, Office of the President, Republic of the Philippines "The College Behind Bars program that Aland Mizell built in the Davao City Jail is essentially a miracle: a thoroughly developed and incredibly organized education program in one of the most challenging settings I have ever laid eyes on. It is testament to what is possible when we truly believe in the power of education to change the world." Dr. Baz Dreisinger, professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, founder of Prison-to-College Pipeline, executive director of the Incarceration Nations Network, and author of Incarceration Nations: A Journey to Justice in Prisons Around the World Aland David Mizell, founder and COE of College Education Behind Bars as well as Minority Care International, earned his master's degrees in political science and public administration and a doctorate in political science with an emphasis on minority politics. He reads and speaks several languages adding to the breadth of his research on alternatives to violence, incarceration, and hopelessness. He is an American social entrepreneur and scholar, living in the Philippines.

"Hearing Voices" features the work of students and faculty in our Community, Liberation, Indigenous, and Eco-Psychologies (CLIE) M.A./Ph.D. specialization, as we participate in transformative practices, artistic creations, and theoretical innovations going on in the communities and environments we share. We meet on campus three days a month for nine months of the year from various places in the U.S. and abroad. During the summer students are involved in fieldwork and research in sites of their own choosing based on interest, commitment, and vocation. Our program brings together community, liberation, and depth psychologies with environmental justice initiatives and indigenous epistemologies and practices in order to be part of the critical work of establishing a 21st century curriculum and practice with a growing emphasis on decoloniality. As prospective students consider applying to CLIE, their most common and pressing question is "What are graduates doing?" A good way to get an overview of this is to read the student and alumni news section in each issue of Hearing Voices. We are especially grateful to the incredible artists who contributed their creative inspiration to this edition.

The United States accounts for 5 percent of the world's population, yet incarcerates about 25 percent of the world's prisoners. Examining a wealth of studies by researchers and correctional professionals, and the experience of educators, this book shows recidivism rates drop in direct correlation with the amount of education prisoners receive, and the rate drops dramatically with each additional level of education attained. Presenting a workable solution to America's mass incarceration and recidivism problems, this book demonstrates that great fiscal benefits arise when modest sums are spent educating prisoners. Educating prisoners brings a reduction in crime and social disruption, reduced domestic spending and a rise in quality of life. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
