This book explores the syntactic nature of inner aspect from a minimalist perspective. It begins with the new observation that there are two independent properties at play in English inner aspect: the object-to-event mapping and event structure. From a discussion of English statives and Russian, it is concluded that the former property is variant and the latter universal; a minimalist conception of language variation arises naturally in this context. Additionally, an exploration of a lexical derivational approach to achievements leads to the expectation that there are no accomplishments in the lexicon. A detailed look at idioms suggests that this expectation is met. These results support the division of labor between an operative lexicon and narrow syntax in aspectual composition; this naturally poses a problem for (neo-)constructional approaches to inner aspect. Finally, one conclusion reached about the syntactic nature of inner aspect regards the object-to-event mapping: it is a purely syntactic phenomenon.

Finishing this book was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It took far too long from original idea to page proofs and suffered from being relegated to small corners of my life. It was very rarely on the front burner. Since I started working on this topic in 1991, there has been a lot of interesting work done on the areas of the articulation of VP, phrase structure mirroring event structure, the use of functional categories to represent Aktionsart, and many other areas that the research presented here touches on. The hardest thing about doing a project of this size is to accept that not everyone’s ideas can be addressed and not all new research can be incorporated. The only way that I have found it possible to let this book go to press is to reread the Preface to Events in the Semantics of English by Terence Parsons where he writes, ‘‘The goal of this book is neither completeness nor complete accuracy; it is to get some interesting proposals into the public arena for others to criticize, develop, and build on. ’’ My aim in this book is to make connections between various accounts of various constructions in various languages at the risk of treating each of these too lightly. I am grateful to too many people to thank them individually.

Sentences may pertain to states or processes or events. They may express duration, frequency, habituality, and many other forms of temporality. How do they do this? It is the aspectual properties of sentences in natural languages which allow the user to express a temporal structure, and Henk Verkuyl presents a unified formal system to account for them. He explains aspectuality in terms of the opposition between terminative aspect and durative aspect, and describes the way in which terminative aspect is compositionally formed on the basis of semantic information expressed by different syntactic elements, in particular the verb and its arguments. The aim is to determine which semantic conditions make a sentence terminative; but at least ten different forms of durative aspectuality are also treated. All are drawn into a theory which can account for both terminative and durative aspectuality together. A Theory of Aspectuality draws together into a coherent whole the author's thinking on the subject over the last twenty years, and will interest all those working on aspect and the semantics of noun phrases. It promises to be a major new contribution to our understanding of the subject.

The practice of medicine has become an information intensive profes sion. Pertinent and detailed information resources and references are proliferating rapidly, while the quantity of patient data gathered during an episode of care can be daunting. Identifying the best guideline and interventions which will lead to an optimal clinical outcome for an individual patient poses an increasingly difficult challenge. Matching the detailed information about a particular patient with the parameters of a guideline may be tedious. Attempting to identify or use a guideline with terms of definitions which differ from those found in a patient's record may well be impossible. Here we confront the well-known "medical vocabulary problem" which plagues nascent efforts to establish elec tronic medical records (EMRs) everywhere. Efficient resource management and the adoption of cost effective strategies are of increasing importance in the new market realities of healthcare in the late 90's. Whether providers seek to describe their practice, implement continuous improvement, engage in outcomes re search, or develop data driven guidelines, a way to represent patient findings and events consistently is required. The standard classifications for administrative data in healthcare, such as ICD-9-CM, have proven to be too coarse for a detailed examination of practice patterns and severity adjusted outcomes. The use of free text to represent diagnoses and pro cedures is unwieldy; unstructured free text cannot support information linkage and analyses without elaborate machine processing or hand ab straction and coding.
