Eight Days In An Inner City School written by Dan Golarz and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This book is written primarily in an authentic dialogue style. It fearlessly describes the consequences of the failure to appropriately prepare a student to become an inner-city teacher. While doing so, the book also exposes a system that has been slammed to the ground by policies, practices, and court decisions that protect the rights of everyone except those who teach and those who desire to learn, but leave these dedicated individuals constantly vulnerable to the violence, anger, hostility, and hopelessness that seem to be a hallmark of so many of our inner-city schools. As this young teacher closes the classroom door and stands alone, a stark picture emerges, a picture that, for the reader, will provoke anger, occasional outrage, and most certainly controversy. At the heart of this story, the author reconstructs, sometimes minute-by-minute, the events and interactions that combine to compel him to leave this first teaching assignment abruptly with a profound sense of confusion, self-doubt, and betrayal. Not limited to the classroom, this tale includes interludes that are informative, occasionally humorous, and sometimes amazingly frank. But what becomes obvious is that the recounting of this experience reveals an open wound and is a plea to the reader to recognize deep pain and justifiable anger. In so doing, it reflects the same quandary and frustrations that continue to be felt by millions of teachers and other educators who are frequently and severely criticized by those who simply do not understand why students and educators trapped in this environment so frequently fail to thrive and succeed and finally choose to leave.

For the past decade Americans have been intensely concerned with the quality of American education, which is hardly surprising given the importance of education to society and the growing evidence of problems in American education. Nowhere are those problems more severe than in our inner cities, where learning has all but ceased in many schools. It was concern about inner-city children that led the Cato Institute to convene a conference, "Education and the Inner City," in Washington in October 1989. Most of the chapters in this volume were originally presented at that conference. As concern about the quality of American education begins to lead Mericans toward major structural reforms, the Cato Institute is pleased to present these essays. We believe they make a major contribution to the national debate on education reform.

Maximum Security written by John Devine and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Education categories.

Escalations in student violence continue throughout the nation, but inner-city schools are the hardest hit, with classrooms and corridors infected by the anger, aggression, and criminality endemic to street life. Technological surveillance, security personnel, and paramilitary control tactics to maintain order and safety are the common administrative response. Essential educational programs are routinely slashed from school budgets, even as the number of guards, cameras, and metal detectors continues to multiply. Based on years of frontline experience in New York's inner-city schools, Maximum Security demonstrates that such policing strategies are not only ineffectual, they divorce students and teachers from their ethical and behavioral responsibilities. Exploring the culture of violence from within, John Devine argues that the security system, with its uniformed officers and invasive high-tech surveillance, has assumed presumptive authority over students' bodies and behavior, negating the traditional roles of teachers as guardians and agents of moral instruction. The teacher is reduced to an information bureaucrat, a purveyor of technical knowledge, while the student's physical well-being and ethical actions are left to the suspect scrutiny of electronic devices and security specialists with no pedagogical mission, training, or interest. The result is not a security system at all, but an insidious institutional disengagement from the caring supervision of the student body. With uncompromising honesty, Devine provides a powerful portrayal of an educational system in crisis and bold new insight into the malignant culture of school violence.

The Culture Of Incompetence written by John Cartaina and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11 with Education categories.

THE CULTURE OF INCOMPETENCE is a passionate, practical expose of the problems and solutions facing inner-city schools today. Intimate memoirs of the author's experiences working in an inner-city district for thirty-two years bring the issues to life in a personal, poignant picture of frustration and hope. This book is written for those people who see teaching as a mission to improve the lives of children who, through no fault of their own, do not receive the quality education that other children receive. It is for those concerned parents who drag themselves to school to visit a teacher after working the second or third shift in a factory. It is for those people who see education as a human and civil right whose quality should not be based on socioeconomic status or geographic location. It is for those teachers and administrators who bang their heads against the bureaucratic wall with occasional success. New teachers and those teachers who want to make a difference should read this book."
