Creativity and innovation research has been hampered by the lack of an overarching, internally consistent theoretical framework. This dissertation developed the initial parts of a comprehensive complexity theory of creativity. This is an articles-based dissertation, consisting of three articles that make individual contributions to an overall complexity theory of creativity. Each article established a potential link between creativity and one characteristic of complex adaptive systems. One argued for the equivalency of creativity and emergence, a primary characteristic of complex adaptive systems, while another showed how the paradoxes identified through decades of creativity research can be explained by another characteristic of complex adaptive systems, the order-chaos dynamic. A third article argued that the small-world networks associated with complex adaptive systems predict that diffusion-of-innovation patterns will be unpredictable, not normally distributed, as has been the dogma of business school texts for decades. A small number of datasets were analyzed, and the results support this prediction. In the concluding chapter, the results of the three articles have been brought together and a complex adaptive systems model developed. The model incorporates creativity as a central feature and includes continuous evolution and a feedback loop that yields increasing complexity. Together, these three articles represent a strong case for recognizing creativity as a characteristic of complex adaptive systems and for continued efforts along this line of research.

During these times of rapid change many complex human systems struggle to be innovative and adaptive and as a result are under threat of decay and even collapse. Complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory describes the phenomena of adaptation and describes innovation as a central component of this process. The literature on CAS theory was explored in this study to better understand the processes of innovation and adaptation and their relationship to each other. A number of characteristics and dynamics (CDs) that describe the operation of a CAS were discovered and synthesized into a framework for innovation. Five of these CDs were identified as foundational to the process of adaptation, namely: open boundaries, diversity, distributed control, cyclical development and feedback. In this study, the author proposes that by fostering the foundational CDs a complex system can become more adaptive. The CAS framework was applied to an engineering organization in two case studies. In the first case study hierarchical process mapping was tested as a tool to analyze the organization in light of the framework. In this case study, nine areas where the foundational CDs could be strengthened to increase the adaptive capacity of the organization were identified. Of primary concern to the organization was the need to foster open boundaries. This would ensure a greater flow of information and knowledge into the organization and between its departments, one means of strengthening the potential for adaptation and innovation. In the second case study, the framework was used to guide an innovation process to bring about improvements to a polymer feed system, one of the organization's products. An open, iterative approach was used to gather practical knowledge for product development. End-users were engaged in two iterations of semi-structured interviews. In the first iteration, nine ideas for technical improvement were identified, four of which were implemented immediately. Of the remaining ideas, the use of preheated water for polymer activation was identified as the most impactful. This idea was pursued further in the second iteration of interviews. Data indicated an estimated reduction of $4000 in monthly operating costs as a result. The innovation approach proved effective in this case study and was recommended to the organization for further use in product development. In this study, the CAS framework proved useful as a starting point to strengthen capacity for innovation and adaptation in the organization. Further effort to develop the foundational CDs is recommended to strengthen the organization and further test the effectiveness of the framework.

Leading up to the financial crisis of 2008 and onwards, the shortcomings of traditional models of regional economic and environmental development had become increasingly evident. Rooted in the idea that ‘policy’ is an encumbrance to free markets, the stress on supply-side smoothing measures such as clusters and an over reliance on venture capital, the inadequacy of existing orthodoxies has come to be replaced by the notion of Transversality. This approach has three strong characteristics that differentiate it from its failing predecessor. First, as the name implies, it seeks to finesse horizontal knowledge interactions as well as vertical ones, thus building ‘platforms’ of industrial interaction. Secondly, it is not a supply, but a demand side model in which needs-driven innovation rather than pure market competition prevails. Finally, it is ongoing through recessionary times, being more robust than over-specialised approaches to economic growth. The intellectual origins of Transversality lie in an aspiration to promote eco-innovation, one of the key hopes of assisting Western regional and national economies to re-balance and escape recession. The policy models of key regional exponents of the concept are explored and their goals achievement is assessed. An array of policy instruments and measures is presented for hands-on policy implementation. The book will be of vital interest to academics as teachers and researchers as well as policy advisers and public servants.

This incisive book examines the role of Intellectual Property (IP) as a complex adaptive system in innovation and the lifecycle of IP intensive assets. Discussing recent innovation trends, it places emphasis on how different forms of intellectual property law can facilitate these trends. Inventors and entrepreneurs are guided through the lifecycle of IP intensive assets that commercialise human creativity. Utilising a range of sector specific, interdisciplinary and actor-focused approaches, each contribution offers suggestions on how Europe’s capacity to foster innovation-based sustainable economic growth can be enhanced on a global scale.

Complexity and emergence in innovation projects Emergence and self-regulation are two important phenomena that define the behaviour of complex adaptive systems. In this reserach innovation at the firm level is approached from the perspective of complex adaptive systems theory. This research deliberatly aims to open up new roads for research by approaching innovation from another perspective than is done in mainstream literature. The research is framed within the so-called complexity paradigm, which is primarily concerned with phenomena like swarm intelligence, self-regulation, emergence and adaptation. Over the last 30 years the interest and focus of attention for these types of systems has grown in the managerial sciences. This research forms a breakthrough since it for the first time applies complex adaptive systems theory in combination with a simulation based on the idea of swarm intelligence in a real-life setting. The results reveal a number of interesting insights and conclusions about the design and improvement of innovation processes and management of innovation projects.
