In response to states' serious shortcomings in preparing pupils for the work force, this decade has seen an explosion of new contracts between schools and outside individuals and organizations. This report focuses on business-school partnerships, specifically what makes them work well and how they influence education and business. Partnerships tend to involve a gradual building of trust. Effective partnership is a dynamic process concerned with changing aspects of educational systems and formulating joint, mutually beneficial goals. Employers have strong reasons for trying to influence education, including raising academic standards, making education more relevant, and introducing new skills. Some partnerships have attempted to develop new learning styles, improve vocational education, forge new school-work linkages, broaden teachers' work experience, apply private-sector wisdom to school management, and make changes in business behavior, especially in recruitment and training. National context has strongly influenced what partnerships have been able to achieve in each Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) country. The report closes with 24 case studies describing examples of school-business partnerships in OECD countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Austria, Germany, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United States.
