From 2001 to 2003, the EFI Regional Project Centre INNOFORCE conducted research on innovation and entrepreneurship in forestry in Central Europe, seeking answers to the following questions: What is the situation and perceived future outlook for forestry in the region? How important are innovation and entrepreneurship considered in the sector? How much innovation and entrepreneurship is actually taking place? What are supporting and impeding factors? The research report provides new knowledge on innovation behaviour of forest holdings and forest related innovation systems in Central Europe and on changes that are necessary to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship in the sector. Survey results are accompanied by lessons learned from more than 30 cases referring to innovations in forestry implemented in eight countries.

"The book deals with the questions of how the concept of innovation is integrated into policies that are relevant for forestry and forest-based industries, and how these policies are coordinated. These questions are also at the core of the COST Action E51 on "Integrating Innovation and Development Policies for the Forest Sector", which was carried out from 2006 to 2010 with the participation of approximately 40 research institutions from 20 countries. This COST Action studies innovation policies and processes in the forest sector at two levels: the policy level; and the level of innovation processes on the ground. This book presents the main outcomes from the policy level by analysing the seven policy fields that have the strongest influence on the innovation activities in the sector: forestry policy, forest-based industries policy, innovation policy, rural development policy, regional development policy, sustainable development policy, and renewable energy policy. The forest sector is traditionally viewed as stagnant and non-innovative in comparison to higher-value added industries. The sector is being challenged by environmental, market and consumer changes at home and internationally. To combat these challenges, forestry firms must undergo a transformation in their activities, including their production methods by producing innovative and sustainable products and materials. This involves investing in innovation, advanced technologies and new products. The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies on firm performance in the Canadian forest sector. The study is based on data from the 2007 Survey of Advanced Technology and interviews with technology adopters. The differences between technology adopters and non-adopters in terms of capital investment, R&D, training, management practices and innovation were analyzed. The findings suggest that the adoption of advanced technologies is important for the realizations of innovations. Firms which were both innovative and adopted technology were most likely to report improvements in performance post-adoption.
