Everyday more than half of American adult internet users read or write email messages at least once. The prevalence of email has significantly impacted the working world, functioning as a great asset on many levels, yet at times, a costly liability. In an effort to improve various aspects of work-related communication, this work applies sophisticated machine learning techniques to a large body of email data. Several effective models are proposed that can aid with the prioritization of incoming messages, help with coordination of shared tasks, improve tracking of deadlines, and prevent disastrous information leaks. Carvalho presents many data-driven techniques that can positively impact work-related email communication and offers robust models that may be successfully applied to future machine learning tasks.

At?rstsight, thisbookisaboutfacerecognitioninthebrain.Itsmorelasting value, however, lies in the paradigmatic way in which this particular problem is treated. From the basic ideas that are worked out here in concrete detail, it is a naturaland simple next step to at leastimagine, if not realizein model form, much more generalstructures and processes, thus helping to bridge the still tremendous chasm between mind and brain. It is the purpose of this foreword to point out these generic traits. For centuries, thinking about the brain has been dominated by the most complexmechanisticdevicesofthetime, clockwork, communicatinghydraulic tubesor,today,thecomputer.Thecomputer,takenasincarnationoftheU- versal Turing Machine, can implement any conceivable process, so that also a functional brain can surely be simulated on it, an idea that, beginning in the ?fties of the last century, has been seducing scientists to create “art- cial intelligence” in the computer. As a result we now have an information technology that displays many functional capabilities formerly regarded as the exclusive domain of the mind. As fascinating as this is, doting on “int- ligent machines” is systematically diverting our attention awayfrom the true problems of understanding the working of the brain.

Advances In Cognitive Informatics And Cognitive Computing written by Yingxu Wang and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-12-08 with Computers categories.

Cognitive Informatics (CI) is the science of cognitive information processing and its applications in cognitive computing. CI is a transdisciplinary enquiry of computer science, information science, cognitive science, and intelligence science that investigates into the internal information processing mechanisms and processes of the brain. Advances and engineering applications of CI have led to the emergence of cognitive computing and the development of Cognitive Computers (CCs) that reason and learn. As initiated by Yingxu Wang and his colleagues, CC has emerged and developed based on the transdisciplinary research in CI, abstract intelligence (aI), and denotational mathematics after the inauguration of the series of IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Informatics since 2002 at Univ. of Calgary, Stanford Univ., and Tsinghua Univ., etc. This volume in LNCS (subseries of Computational Intelligence), LNCI 323, edited by Y. Wang, D. Zhang, and W. Kinsner, presents the latest development in cognitive informatics and cognitive computing. The book focuses on the explanation of cognitive models of the brain, the layered reference model of the brain, the fundamental mechanisms of abstract intelligence, and the implementation of computational intelligence by autonomous inference and learning engines based on CCs.

Fusion Methods For Unsupervised Learning Ensembles written by Bruno Baruque and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-23 with Computers categories.

The application of a “committee of experts” or ensemble learning to artificial neural networks that apply unsupervised learning techniques is widely considered to enhance the effectiveness of such networks greatly. This book examines the potential of the ensemble meta-algorithm by describing and testing a technique based on the combination of ensembles and statistical PCA that is able to determine the presence of outliers in high-dimensional data sets and to minimize outlier effects in the final results. Its central contribution concerns an algorithm for the ensemble fusion of topology-preserving maps, referred to as Weighted Voting Superposition (WeVoS), which has been devised to improve data exploration by 2-D visualization over multi-dimensional data sets. This generic algorithm is applied in combination with several other models taken from the family of topology preserving maps, such as the SOM, ViSOM, SIM and Max-SIM. A range of quality measures for topology preserving maps that are proposed in the literature are used to validate and compare WeVoS with other algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that, in the majority of cases, the WeVoS algorithm outperforms earlier map-fusion methods and the simpler versions of the algorithm with which it is compared. All the algorithms are tested in different artificial data sets and in several of the most common machine-learning data sets in order to corroborate their theoretical properties. Moreover, a real-life case-study taken from the food industry demonstrates the practical benefits of their application to more complex problems.

Information Retrieval And Mining In Distributed Environments written by Alessandro Soro and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-08 with Computers categories.

At DART'09, held in conjunction with the 2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI 2009) and Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT 2009) in Milan (Italy), practitioners and researchers working on pervasive and intelligent access to web services and distributed information retrieval met to compare their work ad insights in such fascinating topics. Extended and revised versions of their papers, together with selected and invited original contributions, are collected in this book. Topics covered are those that emerged at DART'09 as the most intriguing and challenging: (i) community oriented tools and techniques as infrastructure of the Web 2.0; (ii) agent technology applied to virtual world scenarios; (iii) context aware information retrieval; (iv) content based information retrieval; and (v) industrial applications of information retrieval. Every chapter, before discussing in depth the specific topic, presents a comprehensive review of related work and state of the art, in the hope of this volume to be of use in the years to come, to both researchers and students.
