Im Gegenteil: Selbst in jenen Besprechungen, die einen massenwirksamen Film als gelungene Ausnahme markieren, stigmatisieren sie meist im gleichen Atemzug a priori die Gattung als Ganzes als etwas, was sich geistig nicht lohne.2 Oder unternehmen Versuche, die Ausnahme wieder ins stereotype Licht zurückzusetzen3, in dem auf die außergewöhnliche Voraussetzungen, die zu diesem einzigartigen Resultat geführt haben, mehr eingegangen wird, als auf den Film (als Text) selbst. A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE gehört als sog. Ausnahme in den Kern dieser Debatte, wird er von Kritikern als Cronenbergs kommerziellste Arbeit eingeschätzt4 und zugleich dafür kritisiert, wenn Der Tagespiegel gar fragt, ob Cronenberg sich etwa in den Mainstream verirrt habe5; suggerierend, dass dieser Begriff ein Universum sei, das man tunlichst zu meiden habe. Erstaunlich ist dabei, dass das mit Kitsch und Eskapismus assoziierte "Unwort" schwerlich von der Zielgruppe selbst verwendet wird, wird man den "Mainstreambegriff kaum im Foyer eines Multiplex"6 hören. Als habe die Kritik exklusiv für sich gepachtet um mittels dieses Vokabulars zwischen Kunst und Massenware zu polarisieren, wenn im Mainstream mal wieder ein minderwertiges "Kino der anderen"7 gesehen werden soll. Dabei wird selten selbst ein objektiver Begriff dieser Gattung vorgenommen. Am Beispiel von Cronenbergs A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE soll dargestellt und diskutiert werden, wie sich im Mainstreamkino Erzählweisen herausgebildet haben, die von den idealtypischen Merkmalen des Classical Cinema of Narration (nach David Bordwell) signifikant abweichen respektive ob diese "Flexibilisierungen der (Erzähl-)Konzepte"8 überhaupt noch von einem eindeutigen, abweichbaren Schemata des Unterhaltungskinos ausgehen können oder ob es selbst nicht vielmehr

During the last decade, contemporary German and Austrian cinema has grappled with new social and economic realities. The “cinema of consensus,” a term coined to describe the popular and commercially oriented filmmaking of the 1990s, has given way to a more heterogeneous and critical cinema culture. Making the greatest artistic impact since the 1970s, contemporary cinema is responding to questions of globalization and the effects of societal and economic change on the individual. This book explores this trend by investigating different thematic and aesthetic strategies and alternative methods of film production and distribution. Functioning both as a product and as an agent of globalizing processes, this new cinema mediates and influences important political and social debates. The contributors illuminate these processes through their analyses of cinema’s intervention in discourses on such concepts as “national cinema,” the effects of globalization on social mobility, and the emergence of a “global culture.” The essays illustrate the variety and inventiveness of contemporary Austrian and German filmmaking and highlight the complicated interdependencies between global developments and local specificities. They confirm a broader trend toward a more complex, critical, and formally diverse cinematic scene. This book offers insights into the strategies employed by German and Austrian filmmakers to position themselves between the commercial pressures of the film industry and the desire to mediate or even attempt to affect social change. It will be of interest to scholars in film studies, cultural studies, and European studies.

Besonders m nnliche Jugendliche waren seit Jahren die Kernzielgruppe des Kinos und trugen zum Aufschwung der Branche und dem Erfolg der Multiplex-Kinos bei. Die letzten Jahre entwickelten sich f r die Kinobranche zu einem Tief und es werden Stimmen laut, dass umgedacht werden m sse. Die ehemalige Kernzielgruppe geht heute nicht mehr so h ufig ins Kino. Bei Recherchen und Gespr chen mit Personen der Kinobranche zeigt sich, dass es zwei Zielgruppen gibt, die f r die Zukunft des Kinos besonders wichtig sind. Zum einen sind dies m nnliche Jugendliche und zum anderen die Generation 50 plus. Durch einen Besucheranstieg von Personen, die ber 50 Jahre alt sind, ist diese Zielgruppe f r die Branche sehr interessant geworden. Man erkennt erst jetzt ihr Potenzial, doch es fehlen gen gend Informationen ber sie. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob sie sich in den Multiplex-Kinos wohl f hlt und ob die futuristische Form des Kinos noch zeitgem ist, wenn diese Zielgruppe einmal die gr te Kundengruppe darstellt. Eine Internet-Befragung soll das Interesse der Generation 50 plus am Kino eruieren und aufzeigen, wie ein Kino auf lokaler Basis dazu beitragen kann, das Kinoerlebnis an den W nschen der "erfahrenen" Kinobesucher auszurichten. Diese Studie hilft, die Vorlieben und Interessen sowie m gliche Ans tze zu erkennen, um die zuk nftig wichtigste Zielgruppe des Kinos verst rkt anzusprechen: die wachsende Zielgruppe 50 plus.

So schwärmte der deutsche Original-Trailer , als "Sein oder Nichtsein" mit einiger Verspätung 1960 endlich in die hiesigen Kinos kam. Der kleine Verleih Hamburger Deutsche Film hatte sich Lubitschs Spätwerk angenommen und vermarktete es mit dem unpassenden Beinamen "Heil Hamlet". Der Film galt jahrzehntelang als heikel und eine Veröffentlichung in Deutschland als risikoreich. Zu radikal waren bereits die Anfeindungen gewesen, die Lubitsch 1941 mit seinem Film in den USA ausgelöst hatte. In den Vereinigten Staaten führten Anti-Nazi-Satiren Ende der dreißiger, Anfang der vierziger Jahre zu heftigen emotionalen Reaktionen und kaum zu den anvisierten Lachern. Hatte Charlie Chaplins "The Great Dictator" 1940 noch wohlwollende Zurückhaltung geerntet, reagierte die amerikanische Öffentlichkeit und Presse auf "Sein oder Nichtsein" empört. Als Lubitsch im November 1941 mit den Dreharbeiten begonnen hatte, waren die Vereinigen Staaten noch nicht direkt in den II. Weltkrieg involviert. Ganz anders stellte sich die Situation dar, als die Dreharbeiten am 23. Dezember beendet wurden: Nach dem japanischen Angriff auf Pearl Harbor vom 7.Dezember hatten Italien und das Dritte Reich den USA am 11. Dezember den Krieg erklärt. Doch im nachhinein erscheint der Zeitpunkt nicht nur aus weltpolitischen Gründen ungünstig - Hauptdarstellerin Carole Lombard fand kurz vor dem Starttermin bei einem Flugzeugabsturz den Tod, während sie auf einer Amerikatournee für Kriegsanleihen warb. Man unterstellte Lubitsch, er belustige sich auf Kosten eines okkupierten und blutenden Polens. Die New York Times befand seinerzeit, der Film sei geschmacklos, verharmlose die faschistischen Verbrechen und Verbrecher und so wie er ist, "one has a strange feeling, that Mr. Lubitsch is a Nero, fiddling while Rome burns....." .
