Das 17. Jahrhundert kann angesichts der Fülle inschriftlicher Phänomene in den gelehrten Künsten zweifellos als das epigraphische Jahrhundert par excellence angesehen werden, und es ist deshalb kein Zufall, daß in ihm die "Scharfsinnige Inschrift" (Inscriptio arguta) entsteht. Bei der Inscriptio arguta handelt es sich um eine spezifisch barocke Form gelehrter Literatur, die zwischen gebundener und ungebundener Rede angesiedelt ist. Sie zeichnet sich durch ihre zentrierte äußere Form, ihre argute Diktion sowie ihre gedruckten und, etwa beim höfischen Fest, ungedruckten Erscheinungsweisen aus. In der Praxis seit 1619 nachweisbar, entfaltet sich seit 1649 eine umfangreiche rhetorische und poetologische Theoriebildung im Neulateinischen (Masen, Weise, Morhof) und Italienischen (Tesauro), der eine Rezeption in der deutschen Literatur unmittelbar folgt (Harsdörffer, Birken, Weise, Riemer, Hallbauer). Beide werden detailliert nachgezeichnet. Darüber hinaus wird der Einfluß der arguten Inschriftenästhetik auf die Form und satirische Schreibhaltung von Flugschriften herausgearbeitet sowie ein Begriff der textimmanenten Inschrift entwickelt, der unabhängig von der "Scharfsinnigen Inschrift" zu betrachten ist und auf diese Einfluß ausübt. Zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts steht die Inscriptio arguta zwar immer noch hoch im Kurs, doch wird zum einen durch die Kritik an der Argutia-Bewegung, zum anderen durch ein verändertes Verhältnis zwischen Gelehrsamkeit und Schrift in der Frühaufklärung schließlich ihr Ende besiegelt, ebenso wie Argutia-Bewegung und eine positive Bedeutung der Schrift die Entwicklung der Inscriptio arguta vorantreiben.
