This publication is a companion volume to Miscellaneous Publication 273, Insect Enemies of Western Forests, but Keen. Its purpose is to treat in a practical manner the more important forest insects in that part of the United States lying east of the Great Plains or treeless areas, roughly the 100th meridian. There is necessarily some overlapping of the eastern and western regions, particularly in the more arid parts of Texas and the Southwest and along the watercourses traversing the Great Plains where the eastern hardwoods extend westward.

Excerpt from Forest Insects of Australia AS a worker in the field of Entomology, Mr. Walter W. Froggatt needs no introduction and his compilation of this little volume on the Forest Insects of Australia is not the least valuable of his contributions to Science during the past thirty years. Ithis work will be found a fund of information regarding white ants, timber borers, and forest insect pests, which is of both practical and scientific value, and embodying, as it does, the results of many years' careful investigation, it may be accepted as a text and reference book of value by those interested in Forestry, Architecture, or industries in' which wood as a material is employed. The extent of injury done to timber by insect pests is hardly realised, and if the economic loss could be estimated, it would arouse the public mind from its apathy in regard to both the introduction of borer and other pests from abroad, and to the urgent need for protective and remedial measures. The matter is one which demands the serious attention of our legislators, and, in writing this introduction, it is in the hope that this publication may serve to throw light upon it, and to materially assist in its better consideration. Excerpt from The Forest Insect and Disease Situation, Lake States, 1960 Insects and diseases play an important part in the reduction of our vast forest resource. Each year they cause large losses in timber growth and result in tree mortality. But that is not all: These agents attack the forest from seed to finished product. Stocking levels are lowered, growth is retarded, and trees are deformed, thus reducing both quality and quantity of forest products. The protection of our forests against these destructive agents is the responsibility of everyone concerned with the national economy. This report summarizes the information collected by many agencies and individuals on the forest insect and disease situation in the lake States during 1960. The most important aspects are presented briefly in the next few pages. For more detailed discussion see sections on The More Important Forest Insects (or Diseases). Excerpt from Insects Affecting Park and Woodland Trees This work was begun a number of years ago by the writer studying various insects depredating on shade trees, and from that it was very natural to give attention to those affecting forest trees. It assembles in one volume the results Of our studies for a series Of years, together with a summary Of the more important literature relating to the subject. It is not expected that this memoir will supersede the exceedingly valuable work by Dr Packard on Forest and S/um'e Tree Insects, sth Report Of the United States Entomological Commission, but rather that it will be supplementary thereto. It is hoped that the arrangement adopted will facilitate the identi fication Of the different species and aid materially in making the information accessible to the general public. The writer at this time wishes to acknowl edge his indebtedness to the assistants who have been associated with him during the past six years, all of whom have aided more or less in the preparation Of this work. Particular mention should be made Of the work of Mr D. B. Young, now assistant entomologist, who during the last three years, by collecting and otherwise, has secured much valuable data which has been incorporated in this work. Through the courtesy Of Dr L. 0. Howard, Chief of the Bureau Of Entomology, United States Department Of Agriculture, a number Of species were kindly determined by Drs Hop kins and Ashmead. The former named most Of the bark borers or Scoly tids and also generously gave the writer the benefit Of his extended experience in the study Of forest insects. Dr Ashmead is responsible for the determination Of most-of the parasitic Hymenoptera, a group in which he is a well recognized authority. The value Of the work is also greatly enhanced by the large series Of original drawings by Mr L. H. Joutel Of New York. Excerpt from The Insect Enemies of Small Grains Although corn is king in Nebraska, our crops of small grains are not insignificant. The insect enemies of wheat, oats, barley, and rye therefore demand our attention nearly or quite as much as do those which attack corn. Accordingly, during the past year much time has been given to the study of this class of insect pests. While many of the species are identical for the different crops, the nature of the plants themselves being unlike, it necessarily follows that the mode of attack among these ene mies must vary somewhat in each case. This being true, some pains has been taken to treat of them according to their host plants. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
