More than 600 species of insects and mites that feed on trees and shrubs in the prairie provinces are discussed in terms of their distribution, hosts, importance, life cycle and appearance and damage. There are approximately 1100 colour photographs; the life cycle and damage of major pest species are illustrated, and for less important species, primarily the larval stage is shown. Pests attacking coniferous hosts are separated from those attacking hardwoods, and each group is subdivided according to the kind of feeding damage and type of insect involved. An extensive bibliography is provided. In addition to a taxonomic index listing the order and family of each insect or mite, there is a diagnostic index listing the host species, feeding site of the pest, and species of insect or mite involved and an insect index.

Janet and Sheryl answer your questions on things like Placement for sun- and shade-loving plants Pollination, propagation, and grafting Mulching, hilling, trellises, and those oh-so-fancy espaliers Troubleshooting pesky spots, scales, worms, flies, and other killjoys Preventing weather damage and prepping your plants for winter Harvesting and storage methods With a primer on what exactly counts as fruit (scientifically and culturally) and Prairie-friendly lists of species and varietals for every space and inclination, you’ll soon know your drupes from your pomes, your berries from your pepos and be well on your way to harvesting the fruits of your own labour (yes, we went there).

Urban trees on the prairies are essential to our changing landscape environment. I have helped thousands of people with their tree problems over the past 43 years. Tree diseases and how to deal with them continue to plague a very large number of people. "Where can we get more information about these tree problems?" is a question I am constantly being asked. This book will help you to narrow the search for the problems plaguing your trees by going through the images and accompanied text. As well, there are also helpful detailed instructions on how to take care of the nutritional requirements of your trees. Keeping a tree healthy can reduce its susceptibility to diseases much as good nutrition does with people and animals. You can always reach me on line at www.treeexperts.mb.ca if you need any further help. Enjoy your trees!
