In recent years, substantial improvements in the performance of solid propellant guns have resulted from the development of higher energy propellants, higher loading density propellant charge configurations, and propellant geometries and concepts that have provided the progressively increasing gas generation rates required to efficiently use available increases in total energy. Unfortunately, these same features also typically lead to increases in ammunition vulnerability to enemy threats. Coupled with the current interest in much lighter fighting vehicles, the need for ammunition with reduced rather than increased sensitivity is obvious. This report describes the development of a new approach in the U.S. Army to address propellant energy/ performance and sensitivity/vulnerability as a single set of critical design requirements, to be addressed concurrently from the very beginning of the new energetic material research and development cycle. Some elements of this work were presented in abbreviated form at the 19th International Symposium on Ballistics in Interlaken, Switzerland in May 2001.

A new series of cool burning, high impetus, low molecular weight gun propellants has been identified. These propellants contain either cyclic or linear nitramines as crystalline oxidizers in the propellant matrix. Current development efforts are concentrating on lowering the inherently high pressure exponent of the linear burning rate associated with these high energy systems. When these advanced formulations become operational, thermal barrel erosion will be virtually eliminated, hypervelocity projectile firing from operational guns will become possible, and the potentiality for catastrophic failure resulting from the use of aluminum cartridges will be removed. To realize these benefits, the nitramine combustion anomaly must be obviated. (Author).

Four lots of green insensitive munitions gun propellants were tested in uniaxial compression. A production lot of M14 that is currently used in the M865 training round was also tested for comparison purposes. The materials were tested while conditioned at 21 deg, 63 deg, and -32 deg C. The materials were taken to 60% strain using a deformation rate of 1.3 m/s. The stress at failure, strain at failure, compressive modulus, failure modulus, incremental energy density, and the fracture assessment values were recorded for each test.

Unique propellant configurations, such as fast-core designs, require a layered propellant with tailored burn rate. The use of these layered propellants is expected to improve the energy management during the ballistic cycle and hence increase the muzzle velocity. These new propellants under development have different thermochemistry from that of traditional nitrocellulose-based propellants. The layered propellant is typically stacked as laminated disks in the cartridge chamber. Layered propellants (also called fast-core propellants) consist of an inner layer of fast burning high-impetus propellant imbedded in two layers of slower burning low-impetus propellant. Propellant geometries are tightly controlled such that the fast burning inner-core layer does not start burning until the volume available has slightly increased due to the projectile motion. This allows the pressure to be maintained at a high level for a relatively long duration. Advances in energetic materials have been made in all types of composite propellant ingredients, including binders, oxidizers, and metal additives. Special processing techniques of functionally graded energetic materials have also been developed in recent years. The goal of this study is to develop a pair of layered propellants through a "materials-by-design" approach for use in a fast-core gun propulsion application. A pair of baseline propellants was initially developed and named as ME (moderate energy) propellant with a relatively slow burning rate and HE (high-energy) propellant with a fast burning rate. Modifications of these propellants with different ingredients have been made such that the burning rate ratio between fast and slow burning propellants is suitable for use in applications requiring layered propellants (~ 3:1).

The program goal is to determine the applicability of novel energetic materials developed over the last few years, largely under funding by the Office of Naval Research, in electro-thermal chemical (plasma ignited) gun propellants. Particular interest lies in whether the new ingredients can achieve the desired ballistic response and energy goals for this system. A series of extensive thermochemical calculations on a wide range of potential formulations have been completed. A summary of the data generated has been prepared for distribution to an advisory team. Further activity has begun on procurement of critical materials that are essential for the additional tasks, including some initial formulation safety (compatibility) tests. The baseline study focused on sixteen different formulations, containing 24% binder as a representative level with a primary solid making up the bulk of the formulation. A secondary solid was added at five percentages: O,6,12,18, and 24 percent.

Advanced energetic materialsâ€"explosive fill and propellantsâ€"are a critical technology for national security. While several new promising concepts and formulations have emerged in recent years, the Department of Defense is concerned about the nation's ability to maintain and improve the knowledge base in this area. To assist in addressing these concerns, two offices within DOD asked the NRC to investigate and assess the scope and health of the U.S. R&D efforts in energetic materials. This report provides that assessment. It presents several findings about the current R&D effort and recommendations aimed at improving U.S. capabilities in developing new energetic materials technology. This study reviewed U.S. research and development in advanced energetics being conducted by DoD, the DoE national laboratories, industries, and academia, from a list provided by the sponsors. It also: (a) reviewed papers and technology assessments of non-U.S. work in advanced energetics, assessed important parameters, such as validity, viability, and the likelihood that each of these materials can be produced in quantity; (b) identified barriers to scale-up and production, and suggested technical approaches for addressing potential problems; and (c) suggested specific opportunities, strategies, and priorities for government sponsorship of technologies and manufacturing process development.
