Chicago is known throughout the world for its architecture. Although many people are familiar with the citys skyscrapers and public buildings, they often overlook or are unaware of Chicagos mansions that are located throughout the city. These mansions represent Chicagos past and its future, and it can even be said that they are the very embodiment of Chicago and its architecture. These fashionable residences were built to make a statement, and what better way to have done this than to employ the leading architects of the time to design them. These architects included men such as Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry Hobson Richardson, Daniel Burnham, and John Wellborn Root. While the citys mansions are significant because of who built them, they are just as important because of who lived in them. Many of these mansions were built for Chicagos elite businessmen and captains of industry-men who represented old money, new money and big money. Just as important were the families of these men and the other residents who came to live in these mansions-for they left a legacy of their own that contributed to the citys history.

What was once described as an undesirable swampland has been transformed into one of the most beautiful and wealthiest neighborhoods in America. Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood, developed in the late 1800s, was first called the Astor Street District. It was named after one of the first multimillionaires in the United States, John Jacob Astor--even though Astor never lived in Chicago. In 1885, Astor Street District's first mansion was built. Potter Palmer, a dry goods merchant and owner of the Palmer House Hotel, built his palatial, castle-like residence on the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Banks Street; inside the Palmer mansion were 42 lavishly furnished rooms, which required 26 servants to maintain. Many wealthy Chicagoans followed Palmer's lead and built mansions in the neighborhood. Several homes took up an entire city block and, as time progressed, the name Gold Coast was adopted. On January 30, 1978, the entire Gold Coast district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Join authors Wilbert Jones, Maureen V. O'Brien, and Kathleen Willis Morton, longtime residents of the Gold Coast, on an engrossing journey through the neighborhood's history. Includes archival images along with the more contemporary images of photographer Bob Dowey.

Joseph W. Young, Jr., was acknowledged as one of the five or six major city builders in boomtime Florida. From practically nothing in 1920 he created Hollywood By-the-Sea with an elegant Beaux Arts plan of circles and lakes, calling it a "City Beautiful," an ideal first propounded by Daniel Burnham of Chicago. Young had a rare talent for publicity and a knack for making and spending millions--supported by an immense personal charm that is still remembered decades after his death. This first full biography of Young covers his start as city builder in turn-of-the-century California where new cities blossomed and were ballyhooed, his move to Indianapolis, home of Carl Fisher who developed Miami Beach, his creation of Hollywood and Port Everglades, and his move to his Adirondack resort, ending with his dreams to expand Hollywood, fulfilled after his early death.

Uncover the secret Chicago laboratory of Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Style. Before Frank Lloyd Wright officially launched America's most famous architectural career, he was designing the building blocks of his legendary prairie style on the side. In violation of his contract with his employers, Adler and Sullivan, Wright moonlighted as an independent architect from his Oak Park studio. From 1892 through the spring of 1893, he experimented with the elements that would become his signature in houses in Chicago, La Grange and Oak Park. The full roster of these "bootleg homes" has remained a matter of mystery and debate. Robert Hartnett seeks to provide the first definitive account of the hidden artifacts of Wright's storied legacy.
