Where the sky is his ceiling and the mountains his walls, Michael Modzelewski describes his adventures as he forms unusual friendships with passing yachters, salmon fishermen, Kwakiutl Indians, loners and the owner of the house he is staying at, Will Malloff, a man of oversized personality-a healer, builder, woodsman, and thinker. Modzelewski writes with a love for nature and gentle humor about his interactions with the native animals (eagles, whales wolves), as well as local animals(cats, dogs, "tame" wild boars), and other settlers.

As Sundown slips her dock lines, abandons the safety of the harbor, and points north once again, I leave behind the conventions and certainties of civilization. I begin another venture into the hard, crisp world of the fabled Inside Passage, through British Columbia to Alaska. I hear the call of grizzlies and eagles, salmon and halibut, and of tough, visionary people I have known and expect to see again. The unexpected and unknown also lies ahead, and that challenge also calls. Inside the Inside Passage chronicles my adventures on these journeys. It is a collection of true stories linked together by the spirit of adventure and the challenge of self-discovery. Seven of the twenty-one chapters sketch the trip from Seattle to Glacier Bay. It will appeal to boaters who are thinking about traveling the Inside Passage because it contains specific information about distances, anchorages, and provisioning. It will also appeal to armchair travelers, environmentalists, and lovers of good writing and interesting stories. Inside the Inside Passage builds on 30 years of traveling these waters, visiting countless Islands, and discovering quiet anchorages. Five boats carried me on these adventures. My favorite was Sundown, widely known up and down the coast as the "Mac and Mac boat," because earlier in her career she sold hardware for Mac and Mac Hardware from Victoria. Sundown navigated these waters before I was born and frequently I felt more like her temporary custodian than her owner. I feel the same way about the Inside Passage. The magic and mystery existed long before I arrived: it will continue after I leave. Unfortunately, financial exploitation has been part of the history of the Inside Passage. My stories tell of the destruction of the northwest wilderness, with alarming threats from over-fishing, clear-cut logging, fish farms, pollution, irresponsible tourism, and oil tankers. They tell about brave people, Native and non-Native, who have resisted these challenges, sometimes with satisfying success, sometimes in tragic failure. I invite you to share with me the joy and challenge of raw experience, and hopefully you will discover your own heart and voice.

2017 Washington State Book Award finalist, based on the strength of its literary merit and lasting importance! The Ocean is calling me. This is my Journey. With these words, in the spring of 2010, Susan Marie Conrad scaled her world down to an 18-foot sea kayak and launched a solo journey that took her north to Alaska. With no sense of where she belonged in space and unreconciled feelings of a painful childhood following her, she decided that instead of running away, she would run toward her dreams. Her adventure took her along the western coast of North America, through the Inside Passage-a 1,200-mile ribbon of water-in a journey of the sea and soul. The expedition took her deep within herself, humbling her, healing her, helping her to discover the depths of her own strength and courage. On her way from Anacortes, Washington, to Juneau, Alaska, she grappled with fear and exhaustion, forged friendships with quirky people in the strangest places, endured perilous weather and angry seas, and pretended not to be intimidated by 700-pound grizzly bears and 40-ton whales. She lived her dream.

Writer and fisherman Joe Upton recounts the riveting stories of explorers of the past and seafarers of the present in JOURNEYS THROUGH THE INSIDE PASSAGE. His chronicle offers events vivid in their telling: the journey of widow Muriel Blanchet, who solo navigated a small vessel in the 1930s with her five children; the failed meeting of explorers Alexander Mackenzie and George Vancouver in 1793; countless sinkings; and tales from the author's own experiences plying this legendary waterway.
