This brief takes the reader through a 10-year journey of seeking to embed Evidence Based Policing within one of the largest police forces in the world - the Metropolitan Police Service in London, England - from the inside. As a topic, Evidence Based Policing has generated considerable recent interest and academic discussion - although largely remains without a consistent guiding voice for police practitioners. The aim of the brief is to expand upon the current discussions and address this gap within the day-to-day reality of policing where translation of research is a routine part of the day job. The book is organised into three sections: the first explores receptivity to evidence, asking practitioners to locate where they are on a continuum of evidence based craftwork; the second presents the importance of programme integrity and effective implementation in police craft; and the final section explores the challenges in professionalising policing and offers a more nuanced discussion around what it really means to be evidenced based. Throughout the brief the authors promote an insider whole-force strategic approach in landing evidence into policing 'business as normal' as opposed to an external academic or educated individual officer translation approach. Over the course of the monograph the authors draw upon their decade of experience providing case studies, toolkits, exercises, anecdotes and research experience as an inspiration for police practitioners both to practically support and inspire better evidence based working as part of the day job.

Police officers face ethical dilemmas every day in the course of their law enforcement duties. Ethical conundrums and challenges evolve all the time as the society evolve. And there is no static right or wrong ways of dealing with some difficulties; there, however, exist a range of acceptable responses which substantially depend on your knowledge, exposure and training as a police officer. You give yourself the best possible chance of making the right decision, when you are fully updated on new developments and thinking in police circles and legal jurisprudence. This book provides all the details you need to know. Ethics is not indoctrination. The goal isn't to make everyone the same; it is about character and decision-making. Ethics is not an underhanded attempt to change you. No one can change you; you can only change yourself. Ethics is also not an assumption that your ethics are flawed. This isn't remedial ethics. It is a book to help basically good people learn to make the best choices and decisions as they confront the challenges of policing in African societies. You need to be aware that ethics is a perishable skill. It is a skill that can easily become outdated if not updated. It requires continual training and honing, just like driving and shooting. The more updated you are, the better you will be at making ethical decisions as a police officer. This book present leaders, police officers and student of law enforcement with a concise, yet detailed analysis of operational ethics in police work, how to deal with ethical dilemmas and what to do to maintain a high standard of professional conduct as police officers and managers. This book also reflects the peculiarities of African societies in explaining the coping mechanisms in situational ethical scenarios.

Les Kachurek is leading a movement to inoculate police and other law enforcement practitioners from personal and organizational liability, by inspiring transformational change from traditional paradigms to learning organizations. As a police chief, he used his award-winning, Values-Oriented, Daily Ten-Minute Education and Training Model to lead two police departments to extraordinary levels of innovative change and unprecedented accomplishments. This industry-wide best practice reduced risk and civil liability by strategically identifying and preventing problems waiting to happen. The values-oriented foundation helps foster a singular, healthy organizational identity, while creating and nurturing learning and accountability partnerships among supervisors, officers, and civilian support staff. Since it's virtually cost-free, this dynamic approach to police education and training is completely portable. Thus, any law enforcement organization can easily implement it and tailor it to its unique needs and resources. This model interfaces with and improves strategic planning, community-oriented and problem-oriented policing philosophies, intelligence-led endeavors, data collection initiatives, and accreditation efforts. Citing a wide range of real-life stories, the six chapters provide a synergistic framework upon which police learning organizations can be built, police personnel can be empowered, and trust, loyalty, and holistic wellness thrive - and it all comes down to ten-minutes of daily education.

Over the past ten years, the field of evidence-based policing (EBP) has grown substantially, evolving from a novel idea at the fringes of policing to an increasingly core component of contemporary policing research and practice. Examining what makes something evidence-based and not merely evidence-informed, this book unifies the voices of police practitioners, academics, and pracademics. It provides real world examples of evidence-based police practices and how police research can be created and applied in the field. Includes contributions from leading international EBP researchers and practitioners such as Larry Sherman, University of Cambridge, Lorraine Mazerrolle, University of Queensland, Anthony Braga, Northeastern and Craig Bennell, Carelton University.
