Excerpt from Institutes of Ecclesiastical History, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 3 of 4: The Reformation While the ecclesiastical empire of Rome was thus gradually sinking, even her influence as the centre of civilisation grew weaker. The various regions of the west were long In a very disjointed, barbarous condition, being all of them parcelled out among turbulent aristocracies, which paid a very limited and precarious obedience to their several crowns: which also. Excerpt from Institutes of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 4 of 4: Ancient and Modern The modern period of ecclesiastical history may be conveniently dated from the beginning of the seventeenth century. Protestant principles were then found firmly rooted in those communities which profess them still. It is true, undoubtedly, that they were then extensively prevalent in the Austrian states, from which they were subsequently, in a very great measure, expelled. But the imperial court had never forsaken Rome, and it was supported in this adherence by a majority of the people, together with a great preponderance of the aristocracy. Austria, therefore, must be considered as entering upon the seventeenth century in that theological position which she has occupied ever since. The same may be said of France. Her powerful and intelligent population was, indeed, extensively pervaded by protestantism when the sixteenth century closed, and it so continued long afterwards. But in this case, too, the government, backed by a formidable array of aristocratic and popular support, was Romish. Hence patronage and fashion enabled papal divinity to encroach incessantly on the rival creed, until the revocation of the edict of Nantes would no longer suffer a Huguenots voice to be openly heard in France. In most other parts of Europe the religion both of prince and people remains much as the sixteenth century left it. The electoral house of Saxony, lately become royal, is, however, an exception. Excerpt from Institutes of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 1 of 4: Ancient and Modern This period also embraces the first four general councils, to which Christendom has all but universally deferred. A single class of theological questions was decided by these assemblies. The times were disputatious, but could find an opening for con troversy in little else than our Lord's incarnation. Arius viewed Jesus as only the noblest of creatures. _apollinaris made him really God, but imperfectly man. Nestorius argued for two perfect natures, but strictly parted from each other. By Eutyches they were confounded. These different speculations were severally set at rest in the councils of Nice, Constan tinople, Ephesus, and Chalcedon. The sense of Scripture upon questions of paramount importance was now authentically de fined, and every one who adopts the settlement may fairly claim the name of Catholic. Excerpt from Institutes of Ecclesiastical History, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 2 of 4: Medieval Period Means of judging upon this, and upon other questions, besides those already mentioned, that are not yet grown into mere matters of liberal curiosity, are offered in the present volume. It exhibits, therefore, a portion of history which must be studied by all who would understand, not only what immediately follows, but also the present state of European society. The middle ages have left a vivid impress upon the present age, and none can understand its religion, literature, and institutions, who want either means or inclination to make inquiries into their remains.
