This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life The Institutes of the Christian Religion (Institutio Christianae religionis) is John Calvin's seminal work on Protestant systematic theology. Highly influential in the Western world and still widely read by theological students today, it was published in Latin in 1536 (at the same time as the English King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries) and in his native French in 1541, with the definitive editions appearing in 1559 (Latin) and in 1560 (French). The book was written as an introductory textbook on the Protestant faith for those with some previous knowledge of theology and covered a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone and Christian liberty. It vigorously attacked the teachings of those Calvin considered unorthodox, particularly Roman Catholicism to which Calvin says he had been "strongly devoted" before his conversion to Protestantism. The Institutes is a highly regarded secondary reference for the system of doctrine adopted by the Reformed churches, usually called Calvinism. (from wikipedia.com)

Although the Calvins, his ancestors, had been bargemen on the Oise, his father was notary apostolic, procurator-fiscal of the county, clerk of the church court, and diocesan secretary. Young Jean Calvin was eight years old when Luther nailed his theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenburg. The new religion gaining very quickly a footing in France, the youth became influenced by it when studying in Paris at the College de la Marche. He held meetings with Protestants in a cave at Poitiers. His precocity was remarkable. At the age of twenty-three he wrote his first book, a commentary on Seneca's "Treatise on Clemency." At twenty-five he revised a translation of the French Bible. At twenty-seven he published the first edition of his mighty work, "The Institution of the Christian Religion," a treatise which has been styled "one of the landmarks of the history of Christian doctrine." At twenty-eight Calvin was the foremost man in Geneva, and was already one of the most remarkable reformers in the world. His career has rarely been paralleled. Calvin died on May 27, 1564. John Calvin, the French Protestant who broke from the Roman Catholic Church was one of the greatest and most influential of Christian thinkers. He had to leave his native France to escape religious persecution, and spent the rest of his life living and working in Switzerland and Germany. The Protestants, of course, needed a clear statement for the reasons behind their break from the Pope, and Calvin became their leading and clearest spokesman. A true heir of Augustine and Paul, he successfully systematized the Protestant faith in his Institutes -- a marvel of theological completeness and clarity that served as a model for almost all succeeding theologies in the Protestant movement. Though greatly despised throughout history, Calvin's clear understanding of the message of the Bible shows his grasp of the truth of God's Word that has stood the test of time. As is true with most of God's despised saints, only the few with genuine faith will know the truth when they see it. "My sheep know my voice." BOOK FOUR: Of the external means or helps by which God allures us into fellowship with Christ, and keeps us in it Beveridge Translation
