Das Buch zeigt, daß sich religiöse Organisationen zwischen modernen Organisationsstrukturen und religiöser Semantik bewähren müssen. Dadurch wird die Erforschung religiösen Wandels erneut in den Blick gebracht. Religion als soziales System läßt sich im Spannungsfeld der Begriffe "Institutionen - Organisation - Bewegung" beschreiben. Institution und Bewegung können gleichsam als die Extremformen religiöser Vergemeinschaftung bzw. Vergesellschaftung gelten: Bewegung steht für das schöpferisch-revolutionäre Element des Religiösen. Institution steht demgegenüber für habitualisierte, sozial und rechtlich verfaßte und zum Teil hierarchisch gegliederte Formelemente des Religiösen. Mit der gegenwärtigen Deinstitutionalisierung der Konfessionskirchen entfaltet sich die Struktur des Religionssystems in seiner Komplexität: Die Kirchen als religiöse Institutionen übernehmen unter dem Druck einer sich erfolgreich organisierenden Umwelt mehr und mehr den Charakter formaler Organisationen. Auf der anderen Seite verlieren auch religiöse Bewegungen ihre charismatische Unschuld: Gesinnungsethische Normativität kann sich oftmals nur unter Einsatz hochstrukturierter Mechanismen soziale Geltung verschaffen. Der vorliegende Band analysiert das modernisierte religiöse Feld als Spannungsverhältnis von religiöser Institution, Organisation und Bewegung. Er möchte damit einer Perspektive der Erforschung religiösen Wandels unter strukturellen Aspekten erneut Aufmerksamkeit verschaffen.

Reforms and processes of change have become an increasingly pervasive characteristic of European Protestant churches in the last fifteen to twenty years. Driven by perceptions of crises, such as declining membership rates, dwindling finances, decreasing participation in church rituals, and less support of traditional church doctrine, but also changes of governance of religion more generally, many churches feel compelled to explore new forms of operations, activities, and organizational structures. What is the inner dynamic and nature of these processes? This book explores this question by applying perspectives from organizational studies and bringing them into dialogue with ecclesiological categories, seeking to provide a richer understanding of the field of processes of change in churches. Among the questions asked are: What are the implications--organizationally and ecclesiologically--of viewing reform as a church practice, and how does this relate to much more comprehensive waves of public sector reforms? How is church leadership configured and exercised, how is democratic leadership related to the authority of ordained ministry, and how does leadership take on new forms in the context of churches? This volume describes and maps congregations of Christian confessions and denominations, as well as groups with Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, and various other spiritual faiths, in different European countries. Consisting of three parts, it presents concrete sociological studies addressing how established and not established, old and new congregations of various faiths create a new kind of religious diversity at the country level; how religious congregations are challenged and thrive in large cities; and how religious congregations change in the 21st century. The book enlightens by its descriptive analysis and the theoretical questions it raises concerning the religious transformations happening all over Europe. It addresses issues of religious diversity in the cities of Europe by presenting large studies conducted in cities such as Barcelona in Spain, and Aarhus in Denmark. By means of large-scale censuses taken in areas such as North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany and in countries like Switzerland and Italy, the book shows how the historically established churches restructure their congregations and activities. It clarifies for the new gatherers where and how a new diversity of religious congregations is in the process of being established. Finally, the book covers two important topical issues: pluralisation and secularisation. It provides new data on religious diversity, painting a new picture of secularisation: the impact and structural consequences of the long-term decrease of membership in the established churches.

This open access volume assesses the influence of our changing media environment. Today, there is not one single medium that is the driving force of change. With the spread of various technical communication media such as mobile phones and internet platforms, we are confronted with a media manifold of deep mediatization. But how can we investigate its transformative capability? This book answers this question by taking a non-media-centric perspective, researching the various figurations of collectivities and organizations humans are involved in. The first part of the book outlines a fundamental understanding of the changing media environment of deep mediatization and its transformative capacity. The second part focuses on collectivities and movements: communities in the city, critical social movements, maker, online gaming groups and networked groups of young people.
