The path towards democracy in Kenya has been long and often tortuous. Though it has been trumpeted as a goal for decades, democratic government has never been fully realised, largely as a result of the authoritarian excesses of the Kenyatta, Moi and Kibaki regimes. This uniquely comprehensive study of Kenya's political trajectory shows how the struggle for democracy has been waged in civil society, through opposition parties, and amongst traditionally marginalised groups like women and the young. It also considers the remaining impediments to democratisation, in the form of a powerful police force and damaging structural adjustment policies. Thus, the authors argue, democratisation in Kenya is a laborious and non-linear process. Kenyans' recent electoral successes, the book concludes, have empowered them and reinvigorated the prospects for democracy, heralding a more autonomous and peaceful twenty-first century.

The violence following the disputed result of the 27 December 2007 Kenyan presidential elections shattered Kenya's reputation for stability. The death of some 1,500 Kenyans and creation of more than 350,000 refugees prompted swift and co-ordinated action by the African Union and other international partners. This led to a National Accord, a Grand Coalition government and agreement to three commissions of inquiry, two of which are operating. Analysis reveals long-standing systemic issues which contributed to the crisis. Kenya's colonial past has shaped Kenya's present. While there is no inevitable trajectory from the colonial legacy to the recent crisis, several colonial themes resonate including ethnicity, land disputes and the use of violence by organs of the state and elements of society. Concentration of power in the hands of the President, the lack of institutionalised political parties and the dominance of informal customary rules are important contributory factors to the recent crisis, but it has been the behaviour of the elite themselves, whether encouraging ethnic rivalry or acquiescing in grand corruption, which has been decisive in undermining the country's democratic institutions. The price paid in 2008 was not the cost of democracy but the price of the lack of democracy. For democracy to develop, the political elite will need to lead in ensuring that formal rather than informal rules apply and that the rule of law prevails. The paper proposes initial steps to develop democratic legitimacy and accountability through institutionalising political parties' membership, candidate selection and policy development processes. Key, however, is the will of the elite to create the space for Kenya's democratic institutions to develop. Reform is essential to break the central paradox of Kenyan politics, that as the elite operate on a level increasingly separate from and unaccountable to the people, so voters fall back on their ethnicity for security.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 7, University of Aarhus (Institute of Culture and Society), course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: Scholars agree that modern political democracies are almost impossible without vibrant, free and activist civil societies. In Africa, as in many other parts of the developing world, civil societies have arisen as a response to the dysfunction and despotism of the postcolonial state. Given the current political developments in Kenya, including a new constitution promulgated in August 2010 that has been applauded as being very progressive and with an elaborate chapter on Bills of Rights, and its continuing implementation, the relatively peaceful, largely “free and fair” general elections of March 2013 that KHRC monitored, it can be said that the organization has positively played a positive role in the last quarter of a century but there is still a long way to go for real democratic principles to be permanently enshrined among the Kenyan political elites and state institutions and as such KHRC must continue on its struggle to keep the various regimes that come into power on their toes and engage them on the way towards ensuring a strong and stable Kenyan state that is deeply rooted in democratic governance and that has accountability, transparency and respect for human rights. This thesis there seeks to examine how civil society, represented in this case study by KHRC have contributed to the increased democratic space in Kenya, and therefore be able to conclude whether civil society and NGOs contribute to democratization and democratic governance within the state. Scholars agree that modern political democracies are almost impossible without vibrant, free and activist civil societies. In Africa, as in many other parts of the developing world, civil societies have arisen as a response to the dysfunction and despotism of the postcolonial state.

Assessing three of the most enduring civilian regimes in Africa--Botswana, Kenya, and, until the December 1999 coup, the Ivory Coast--Boubacar N'Diaye focuses on the role of civilian regimes in the institutionalization of civilian control. The author warns that only government legitimacy and a culture of genuine military professionalism are likely to assure civilian control of the military. N'Diaye calls for a bold conceptual shift in the study of African civil-military relations away from expedient short-term coup avoidance. Refreshingly, his study emphasizes the policies regimes enact instead of the structures of African societies or the personal idiosyncrasies of leaders. This book has important implications not only for understanding the causes and outcomes of coups in Africa, but also for the study of emerging democracies everywhere.
