Located in the often-contentious center of the European continent, German territory has regularly served as a primary tool through which to understand and study Germany’s economic, cultural, and political development. Many German geographers throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries became deeply invested in geopolitical determinism—the idea that a nation’s territorial holdings (or losses) dictate every other aspect of its existence. Taking this as his premise, Mingus focuses on the use of maps as mediums through which the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union sought to reshape German national identity after the Second World War. As important as maps and the study of geography have been to the field of European history, few scholars have looked at the postwar development of occupied Germany through the lens of the map—the most effective means to orient German citizens ontologically within a clearly and purposefully delineated spatial framework. Landkarten sind vielseitige Medien: Mit ihnen werden Ressourcen erschlossen, militärische Operationen geplant, politische Forderungen symbolisiert, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse präsentiert und Wohnungen geschmückt. Sie vermitteln stets eine bestimmte Sicht auf die Welt, die auch durch die Kartographen und deren visuelles Wissen geprägt ist. Bei der Analyse von Karten geraten diese Protagonisten der Weltbildproduktion jedoch oftmals in den Hintergrund. Philipp Meyer stellt mit Hermann Haack (1872-1966) und Paul Langhans (1867-1952) zwei äußerst produktive Kartographen in den Mittelpunkt seiner Studie. Beide prägten in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts den zeitgenössisch renommiertesten deutschen Verlag kartographischer Erzeugnisse: Justus Perthes in Gotha. Anhand von Haack und Langhans untersucht Meyer, wie im Zeitalter von Kolonialbewegung und nationalistischen Diskursen völkische und rassistische Deutungsmuster in den Karten visuell übersetzt wurden. Dabei wird die Beziehung von Politik und Kartographie im Hinblick auf den Zusammenhang von wirtschaftlichen Verlagsinteressen und der visuellen Gestaltung von Karten beleuchtet. Auf diese Weise erweitert Meyer die bisherige Forschung zu den politischen Kontexten von Kartographie um zentrale Aspekte.

Die "Alma Mater Berolinensis" wurde auf Initiative Wilhelm von Humboldts durch König Friedrich Wilhelm III am 16. August 1809 gegründet und nahm 1810 ihren Forschungs- und Lehrbetrieb auf. Von 1828 bis 1945 führte sie den Namen "Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität", seit 1949 ist sie die Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Die Berliner Universität gewann ihre herausragende Eigenständigkeit mit der Durchsetzung des Forschungsimperativs in der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit und durch ein die Lehrenden wie die Lernenden umschließendes Wissenschaftsethos. Als Verkörperung des deutschen Universitätsmodells erlangte die Berliner Universität prägenden Einfluss auf die weitere Entwicklung des deutschsprachigen und internationalen Wissenschaftssystems. Bereits in ihrer Gründungs- und Frühphase sind die modernen Prinzipien von Forschung und Lehre eingebettet in das Pathos des nationalpatriotischen Aufbruchs, verbunden auch mit preußisch-vaterländischer Gesinnung und zugleich der internationalen Wissenschaftskommunikation. Die exponierte Stellung der Universität im Kaiserreich lebte von der Kompetenz ihrer Mitglieder und von der Macht des imperial zentralen Standorts Berlin, sie war ermöglicht durch die weitsichtige preußische Reformstrategie Althoffs und die engen personellen wie strukturellen Verflechtungen der Universität mit der reich differenzierten Berliner Wissenschaftslandschaft. In Weimarer Republik, Nationalsozialismus und nach 1945 überlagern politische Konflikte die Arbeit der Universität, die sich erst nach 1990 wieder – erfolgreich - dem Anspruch der Gründung nach wissenschaftsimmanenten Kriterien stellen kann. Die "Geschichte der Universität zu Berlin" analysiert in den Bänden eins bis drei zunächst die Biographie der Institution von ihren Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Dabei werden einerseits die wechselnden Gestalten der Universität in ihren Fakultäten und Instituten, Corpus und Status der Lehrenden in ihrer universitären Praxis und den ihnen eigenen Lebensformen dargestellt, die andererseits zugleich in den politischen, gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Kontext verortet werden. In den Bänden 4 bis 6 wird die Praxis einer modernen Forschungsuniversität beschrieben, und zwar als Praxis der universitär etablierten Disziplinen im Kontext des universitären Fächergefüges, innerhalb der Wissenschaftslandschaft in Berlin und im nationalen wie internationalen Forschungs- und Reflexionszusammenhang.
