Ethel Traphagen's work Costume Design and Illustration is a detailed textbook for use by those working to create and accurately represent costumes using illustrations. This is clearly intended to be an instructional work for aspiring and practicing costume designers. Before offering technical advice, Traphagen highlights what she believes to be an important distinction between designers and illustrators. Designers are those who must create a garment from their imagination and represent it on a page, whereas illustrators must take a garment that exists and accurately represent it through a drawing. Traphagen believes it is vital for both designers and illustrators to have an intimate knowledge of the skills and requirements of the other's task, and thus presents this book as essential to both groups. The information presented in this textbook follows a logical progression. Early chapters detail strategies and techniques for effective sketching, including information on sketching both with and without models. Later chapters discuss specific methods to use when sketching, the use of colour in illustrations, the principles of effective fashion design, and specific information on period fabric selection, amongst other topics. Costume Design and Illustration is a brief and accessible work. The images presented within the book are useful and effectively illuminate the text. While this book would be most useful for those with some experience in costume design and illustration, it can also serve as a worthy introduction to the topic. At less than 200 pages, it can be read in a day, but would probably be best served by slowly digesting the techniques presented within and spending ample time practicing. For anybody involved in costume design, or for those interested in getting into the art, Costume Design and Illustration would be an excellent addition to your library. It was intended that a Bibliography should have been printed at the end of this book, i which would have shown the range of these obligations; but it was found to be impossible to include this, as it would have increased unduly the Size of the book. This bibliography will be issued, with some additions, in a separate form at a later date, when it is hoped that it will prove of service to the student. But it must be stated here that the author's chief indebtedness is to the Rev. Herbert Haines' Manual of Monumental Brasses, now, unfortunately, out of print, and comparatively costly, but which for more than forty years has been and still remains the standard work on the subject. Many of the illustrations are from photographs, taken directly, of the brasses themselves. The author's grateful acknowledgments are due to Mr. E. M. It is fascinating, because it conjures up visions of royal personages, knights and ladies. The laws of the Middle Ages (edward III) required that it be worn only by nobles, and to-day in Europe ermine is worn on state robes; the rank and position of the wearer is in many cases indicated by its presence or absence and the disposition of the black spots, and when worn in crowns or coronets it is a recognition of heraldry. Therefore, at all times it should be reserved for state occasions or worn for mally with certain royally textured and dignified clothes and fabrics, just as velvets and satins are reserved for formal gowns and not for kitchen or garden work, just as large velvet hats are not worn in the morning with workaday clothes or short skirts, and just as royally plumed, large velvet hats are suited only to formal afternoon or evening gowns of velvet or satin. It includes problems embracing the fundamental principles involved in the selection and design of clothing; the theory and use of color; pattern-making and clothing construction. As the mission of the text is chiefly the exposition of constructive processes, the selection of apparel and choice of material has been treated in a manner as best fitted into the scheme of the book. A more scientific treatment of textiles may be found in the numerous texts listed in the bibliography. The construction of garments has been approached from the standpoint of those who have had instruction in elementary sewing. For those who have not had such instruction, a review of the fundamental stitches, and some simple processes, have been included in the section on undergarments. When used in schools and colleges, it is not intended that the subject matter be taken bodily from the text for classroom use, but rather that a selection of problems be assigned by the teacher, that will best fit the needs of students, and the time allotted to the subject in the curriculum; and that the text in the hands of students be supplemented by the teacher's instruction. It is important that teachers read the section written for them, which is intended to aid in an intelligent use of the text (pp. 426 - 437). In the home, the text will, it is believed, serve as a reliable handbook to the woman who makes her own clothing or supervises its construction; while the woman who purchases ready to wear garments will receive help in her selection by the standards suggested here.
