Air-pumps, electrical machines, colliding ivory balls, coloured sparks, mechanical planetariums, magic mirrors, hot-air balloons - these are just a sample of the devices displayed in public demonstrations of science in the eighteenth century. Public and private demonstrations of natural philosophy in Europe then differed vastly from today's unadorned and anonymous laboratory experiments. Science was cultivated for a variety of purposes in many different places; scientific instruments were built and used for investigative and didactic experiments as well as for entertainment and popular shows. Between the culture of curiosities which characterized the seventeenth century and the distinction between academic and popular science that gradually emerged in the nineteenth, the eighteenth century was a period when scientific activities took place in a variety of sites, ranging from academies, and learned societies to salons and popular fairs, shops and streets. This collection of case studies describing public demonstrations in Britain, Germany, Italy and France exemplifies the wide variety of settings for scientific activities in the European Enlightenment. Filled with sparks and smells, the essays raise broader issues about the ways in which modern science established its legitimacy and social acceptability. They point to two major features of the cultures of science in the eighteenth-century: entertainment and utility. Experimental demonstrations were attended by apothecaries and craftsmen for vocational purposes. At the same time, they had to fit in with the taste of both polite society and market culture. Public demonstrations were a favourite entertainment for ladies and gentlemen and a profitable activity for instrument makers and booksellers.

During his time as founder and pastor of Temple of the Eternal Light, Jerome Birnbaum created a mail-order home study program called Thirteen Tools Toward Enlightenment. Now revised and edited into book format by Jerome's surviving spouse, Karen DePolito, this program provides a thorough introduction to the practice of magick as a means to self-improvement. Jerome's work is rooted primarily in the Caballa, the ancient Hebrew mystical system on which much of our contemporary Western magick is based. Thirteen Tools guides the reader through the theory and history behind Caballa, including esoteric interpretation of traditional Judeo-Christian scripture. You will also learn techniques for concentration, meditation and visualization that are essential to successful magickal work. Additionally, the book provides instruction in creating magickal space, finding the proper clothing and tools for your working, and rituals for purification and consecration. With its recreation as a book, Thirteen Tools Toward Enlightenment can now be studied and appreciated by readers everywhere.

An Enlightenment Intensive offers a distinct method of personal growth. It is not a religion, a branch of Zen or Yoga, or part of any other system. It does not offer any guarantees or promised results. Instead, this "pure practice" offers a place for people to explore the ultimate questions of existence with practical guidance at each step. This book is written for those people seeking a deeper understanding of who and what they really are, and is meant to help readers make an informed decision about whether an Enlightenment Intensive is right for them.

Electricity was the scientific fashion of the Enlightenment, 'an Entertainment for Angels, rather than for Men'. Lecturers attracted huge audiences to marvel at sparkling fountains, flaming drinks, pirouetting dancers and electrified boys. Enlightenment optimists predicted that this new-found power of nature would cure illnesses, improve crop production, even bring the dead back to life. Benjamin Franklin, better known as one of America's founding fathers, played a key role in developing the new instruments and theories of electricity during the eighteenth century. Celebrated for drawing lightning down from the sky with a kite, Franklin was an Enlightenment expert on electricity, developing one of the most successful explanations of this mysterious phenomenon. But Patricia Fara, Senior Tutor of Clare College Cambridge, reveals how the study of electricity became intertwined with Enlightenment politics. By demonstrating their control of the natural world, Enlightenment philosophers hoped to gain authority over society. And their stunning electrical performances provided dramatic evidence of their special powers.
