La Estrategia Regional sobre R4T ha sido concebida como un instrumento regional para contribuir a los esfuerzos e iniciativas que se llevan a cabo en la región y tiene como objetivo reforzar la coordinación y focalizar esfuerzos, acciones y buenas prácticas para apoyar la comprensión y reducción del riesgo; fortalecer la gestión de emergencias fitosanitarias en ALC, así como mejorar la resiliencia del sector bananero y agrícola y reducir los daños y pérdidas relacionados con la introducción y propagación del marchitamiento por Fusarium, raza tropical 4. La estrategia está alineada con las prioridades “Marco de Sendai para la Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres 2015-2030” (UNISDR, 2015), la “Estrategia Regional para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres en el Sector Agrícola y la Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional en América Latina y el Caribe (2018 - 2030)” y las Normas Internacionales de Protección Fitosanitaria de la Convención Internacional de Protección Fitosanitaria (CIPF). Abarca el período 2021-2030 y los países de ALC, con énfasis en aquellos que producen y exportan musáceas, insertándose en las estructuras existentes en las ORPF y ONPF para efectos de su implementación. El plan de acción regional tiene tres componentes destinados a fortalecer la coordinación regional e interinstitucional para mejorar los planes de preparación ante la amenaza del focR4T; mejorar la formación de recursos y fortalecer la capacidad de gestión de emergencias en los países y la región y debe ejecutarse hasta el 2024. La estrategia regional y el plan de acción fueron respaldados por las ORPF y 23 ONPF de ALC durante el proceso de validación y aprobación regional.

In 2008, the Codex Alimentarius members agreed that it is important for countries to globally share the results of genetically modified (GM) food safety assessment and subsequently the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is hosting an online database entitled FAO GM Foods Platform (http://www.fao.org/gm-platform) to share the relevant data. As of September 2019, only 23 out of 189 Codex members have been able to share the relevant data. In order to understand the challenges countries may be facing in conducting GM food safety assessment, two separate sets of questionnaires were sent to all 189 Codex members in July 2019. Questionnaire A was sent to 166 Codex members who had not shared any GM food safety assessment result on the platform, while questionnaire B was sent to those 23 Codex members who have been actively sharing the GM food safety assessment results on the Platform. A total of 116 Codex members responded between July and September 2019. All responses are recorded as they were received. While the present document is a simple compilation of the responses, a complete analysis of the results was made and integrated in to another FAO publication entitled Reality of GM food safety: Are we effectively evaluating it? Technical Background Paper for the FAO GM Foods Platform Community Meeting 2019.

Debido a la resistencia a los antimicrobianos (RAM), las infecciones farmacorresistentes suponen un lastre cada vez mayor para la salud humana, animal, vegetal y ambiental. Las infecciones farmacorresistentes pueden convertirse en una de las principales causas de muerte. La RAM puede llevar a decenas de millones de personas a la pobreza extrema, el hambre y la malnutrición; además, se prevé que conlleve pérdidas económicas que asciendan a varios puntos porcentuales del producto interno bruto. No obstante, si actuamos con rapidez, podemos evitar que esto ocurra. En este documento se presenta el Plan de acción de la FAO sobre la resistencia a los antimicrobianos para 2021-2025, que constituye una hoja de ruta con la que concentrar los esfuerzos mundiales de lucha contra la RAM en los sectores de la agricultura y la alimentación. El objetivo del plan es contribuir a acelerar el progreso en el desarrollo y la aplicación de planes de acción nacionales multisectoriales para hacer frente a la RAM, con especial hincapié en las prioridades estratégicas y los ámbitos de especialización en los que la FAO puede prestar apoyo. El plan de acción ha sido elaborado por un equipo multidisciplinar de la FAO para garantizar que se tengan en cuenta todas las dimensiones pertinentes —incluidas la sanidad y la producción de animales terrestres y acuáticos, la producción de cultivos, la inocuidad de alimentos y piensos, los recursos genéticos, la gestión de los recursos naturales, la comunicación de riesgos y los cambios de conducta—, prestando especial atención a los marcos reguladores, las normas y los procesos de acción colectiva normativos y ascendentes. The 2018 FAO-OIE-WHO (Tripartite) zoonoses guide, “Taking A Multisectoral, One Health Approach: A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries” (2018 TZG) is being jointly developed to provide member countries with practical guidance on OH approaches to build national mechanisms for multisectoral coordination, communication, and collaboration to address zoonotic disease threats at the animal-human-environment interface. The 2018 TZG updates and expands on the guidance in the one previous jointly-developed, zoonoses-specific guidance document: the 2008 Tripartite “Zoonotic Diseases: A Guide to Establishing Collaboration between Animal and Human Health Sectors at the Country Level”, developed in WHO South-East Asia Region and Western Pacific Region. The 2018 TZG supports building by countries of the resilience and capacity to address emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases such as avian influenza, rabies, Ebola, and Rift Valley fever, as well as food-borne diseases and antimicrobial resistance, and to minimize their impacts on health, livelihoods, and economies. It additionally supports country efforts to implement WHO International Health Regulations (2005) and OIE international standards, to address gaps identified through external and internal health system evaluations, and to achieve targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2018 TZG provides relevant country ministries and agencies with lessons learned and good practices identified from country-level experiences in taking OH approaches for preparedness, prevention, detection and response to zoonotic disease threats, and provides guidance on multisectoral communication, coordination, and collaboration. It informs on regional and country-level OH activities and relevant unisectoral and multisectoral tools available for countries to use.

The 2020 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture has a particular focus on sustainability. This reflects a number of specific considerations. First, 2020 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code). Second, several Sustainable Development Goal indicators mature in 2020. Third, FAO hosted the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability in late 2019, and fourth, 2020 sees the finalization of specific FAO guidelines on sustainable aquaculture growth, and on social sustainability along value chains.
