The only reference wholly dedicated to this complex topic, Diagnosis and Treatment of Mitral Valve Disease: A Multidisciplinary Approach provides authoritative, must-have information on the disease processes affecting the mitral valve, interpretation of diagnostic studies, and medical, transcatheter, and surgical treatments needed for mitral valve repair. Using a multidisciplinary approach, Drs. Scott Goldman and William Gray oversee a “who’s who team of contributing authors who offer a holistic view of the modern treatment of mitral valve disease for today’s cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, and other cardiac team members. Includes foundational chapters on anatomy and pathophysiology of the mitral valve—critically important topics when treating multiple complex and highly dynamic structures that function as a single unit. Covers diagnostic tools, medical treatments, surgical therapies, and transcatheter therapies, and provides tips for developing a successful mitral valve program (with baseline thresholds, common pitfalls, and a checklist for hospitals). Uses an accessible, quick-reference format that features takeaway chapter openers, bulleted key points, end-of-chapter summaries, a common nomenclature and glossary of terms, key references, and ample line drawings, photographs, tables, charts, and graphs throughout. Incorporates the essential role of imaging in structural transcatheter interventions, including echocardiography and transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), and their uses in diagnostic work-up, procedural planning, intra-procedural guidance, and follow-up. Features dozens of procedural videos, including transthoracic echocardiogram; cardiac MRI for mitral regurgitation; transcatheter mitral valve repair; transcatheter valvuloplasty; percutaneous mitral valve interventions; MitraClipTM positioning; and many more.

The minimally-invasive or endoscopic mitral valve surgery is one of the most attractive and most interesting areas of the modern heart surgery. The book describes first all practical steps necessary in a clinic from the idea of the introduction of the minimally-invasive mitral valve surgery up to practical realization of the operation program. The initial explanation of organizational and financial aspects allows an exact resource planning and protects against wrong expectations and failures. An extensive and detailed representation of the reconstruction technologies possible today as well as the specific features of her endoscopic application allow quick learning of the surgical technology. Numerous tips and tricks and informative pictures of the most frequent findings and the accompanying reconstruction technologies underline the practical orientation of the book.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) affects millions of patients worldwide. It is a progressive condition that can worsen when left untreated, possibly leading to compensatory remodeling of the left ventricle. This can result in reduced functional capacity, poor quality of life, repeat hospitalizations, and even death from heart failure. Open, arrested heart

This book provides a comprehensive account of the role of echocardiography in patients with mitral valve disease. The normal echocardiographic anatomy of the mitral valve is first presented, and the applications of echocardiography in mitral valve disease are then covered in detail by experts from different subspecialties in cardiology. Topics include etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, assessment of severity, and role of echocardiography in percutaneous and surgical techniques. The highly readable text is supported by a wealth of color images obtained with 3D echocardiography, currently the gold standard for the evaluation of mitral valve disease. The interdisciplinary approach used in describing the diagnostic and therapeutic applications will make this book useful for the clinical cardiologist as well as the echocardiographer. It will allow cardiologists to advance their knowledge in the field and will serve as an excellent updating tool for professionals engaged in echocardiography and cardiac diagnostic imaging.

This book discusses the different aspects of mitral regurgitation as well as diagnostic and imaging studies to evaluate the patients at risk. Treatment options for patients with mitral regurgitation are discussed including some of the new non-surgical treatments. Various medical devices and technologies have evolved recently making the traditional surgery not the only option in these patients. This book will be helpful to surgeons, cardiologists, as well as other clinicians and students interested in the diagnosis and treatment of mitral regurgitation.

TRANSCATHETER MITRAL VALVE THERAPIES An essential survey of the advancing field of transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement Minimally invasive transcatheter therapies have revolutionized the treatment of structural heart disease. Greatly improving outcomes for higher-risk patients, transcatheter aortic valve replacement is now established as a safe and effective alternative to invasive surgery. The mitral valve, however, poses further challenges. Contending with one of the heat’s most anatomically and pathologically complex components, practitioners and engineers have yet to perfect a stream-lined, widely deliverable therapy—though they are getting closer and closer to this goal. Transcatheter Mitral Valve Therapies provides a far-reaching survey of the field of mitral interventions in its current state. Highlighting the stumbling blocks preventing transcatheter mitral valve replacement’s widespread adoption, the book’s international group of contributors discuss the improvements to be made in repair and replacement procedures, as well as the adjunctive use of imaging and pharmacologic therapies. This ground-breaking text: Provides detailed explanations of transcatheter repair, transcatheter replacement, and adjunctive procedures Features chapters on the use of imaging to aid in patient selection, procedure planning, and intra-operative guidance Discusses the importance of minimally invasive approaches for mitral valve repair Examines anticoagulation following transcatheter mitral valve interventions Outlines the possible future of transcatheter mitral valve therapy Transcatheter Mitral Valve Therapies is an important, up-to-date resource for interventional cardiologists, as well as all clinical researchers and practitioners seeking information on this vital and developing treatment.

The International Symposium on Ischemic Mitral Incompetence was held December2-4,1988 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Berlin . It wasorganized bythe German Heart Center Berlin with the primary aim to bring together experts interested in the subject of ischemic mitral regurgitation. Our intention was to face the problems associated with diagnosis and treatment of mitral incompetence resulting from coronary artery disease. A "work-up" of the whole topic from its basic, diagnostic, and surgical aspects wasinitiated. In the first section weconcentrate on the basic anatomical and pathophysiological knowledge, as well as on experimental work. In the second section cardiologists report on inci dence of ischemic mitral incompetence, diagnostic methods that include esophageal echocardiography, follow-up studies of medical- and surgical-treated patients. This section considers interventional therapy in acute myocardial infarc tion, as well. The third section includes contributions by cardiac surgeons with many years' experience in operative treatment of ischemic mitral incompetence including the decision-making criteria for non-mitral valve surgery, and for valve reconstruction or replacement.
