This dissertation develops an investigation into psychiatry that is both theoretical and pragmatic. The research critically assesses conventional psychiatry, promotes personal and professional development, and aims to enhance clinical practice. My thesis is that a systematic engagement with integral methodological pluralism (IMP) can be used to assist psychiatrists and other psychiatric providers as well as psychiatric providers-in-training, to develop greater wisdom, compassion, and skillful means. There are several major aspects to this metatheoretical research study. First, I review and draw from fields such as critical and liberatory psychiatry, metaintegral and integral theories, and the history of psychiatric paradigms to show the need for psychiatric providers to engage issues of mental health more integrally. Second, I explicate and use IMP to engage several emergent fields in psychiatry: postcolonial psychiatry, psychedelic psychiatry, neurodiversity, and ecopsychiatry. These fields help bring balance to conventional Western psychiatry, which is currently biased toward an individual, pathological, biological, and normative agenda. Third, I conclude this dissertation with a discussion of the outcomes as well as a critical assessment of the research. This work has several underlying themes. Mental healthcare providers can develop a more comprehensive understanding of mental health issues, along with an increased ability to respond to suffering, by engaging diverse perspectives. A related theme that emerged through the course of this research was that attending to provider and patient development explicitly has value in the context of mental healthcare. In my efforts to develop a more integral and liberatory psychiatric practice, and in my work with Indigenous people, it became increasingly clear that postcolonial and neocolonial issues needed to be addressed, and this was another recurring theme throughout the study. This study is of particular interest to practicing psychiatrists as well as students and other providers of mental healthcare who are interested in personal and professional growth beyond the bounds of conventional Western psychiatry. This work may also be of interest to other healthcare professionals (including clinicians, administrators, and policymakers), individuals seeking or considering psychiatric care, and anyone interested in understanding more about an integral approach to psychiatry and mental health.

"This report presents compelling evidence that people with mental health conditions meet major criteria for vulnerability. The report also describes how vulnerability can lead to poor mental health, and how mental health conditions are widespread yet largely unaddressed among groups identified as vulnerable. It argues that mental health should be included in sectoral and broader development strategies and plans, and that development stakeholders have important roles to play in ensuring that people with mental health conditions are recognized as a vulnerable group and are not excluded from development opportunities. The recommended actions in this report provide a starting point to achieve these aims."--Page xxiv.

The proposal for multiprofessional work in mental health brings a special form of organization with the joint contribution of health professionals that can work as a team in assisting people with psychological disorders. It aims to provide the most appropriate and complete assistance to users with mental disorders regardless of the degree of morbidity. In this sense, the determination of the National Health Council of Brazil is to recognize as regulated health professionals the following regulated professional categories: Social Workers; Biologists; Biomedical; Dental Surgeons; Physical Education; Nurses; Pharmacists; Physiotherapists; Speech therapists; Doctors; Veterinary Physicians; Nutritionists; Psychologists; and Occupational Therapists. They contributed decisively working together, allowing professionals to act in health actions nationwide, leaving the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde- SUS) the legitimacy attributed by the Magna Charta Libertatum of Brazil, to proceed with the norms for training the professionals that make up the sector’s of Health “The Unified Health System is responsible, under the terms of the law: to order the training of human resources in the area of health”. Through this legal framework, integrative health policies provided conditions for establishing the various transformations in the socio-political-cultural scenarios, reflecting on the epidemiological contour of society, leading to an increase changes in health models and contributing decisively to the conversions of care práxis, incorporating the multiprofessionality with agents with medium technical training through the Community Health Agent, Nursing Technician and Oral Health Technician. The establishment of knowledge and practices that provide the integration of the common field of activity of the multiprofessional teams, in the various performance scenarios, conducts the various actions which include the Family Health Support Center, Health at School Program, Health Academy, culminating in Psychosocial Care Centers I, II and III. They are specialized compositions in the approach to mental health for the treatment and social reintegration of SUS with mental disorders of different magnitudes users. In this way, it is evident that in Mental Health care by a multiprofessional team, it provides a gain for service users and contributes decisively to professionalization at different levels of training, as a result of continuing education in service.

The Social Determinants Of Mental Health written by Michael T. Compton and has been published by American Psychiatric Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-01 with Medical categories.

The Social Determinants of Mental Health aims to fill the gap that exists in the psychiatric, scholarly, and policy-related literature on the social determinants of mental health: those factors stemming from where we learn, play, live, work, and age that impact our overall mental health and well-being. The editors and an impressive roster of chapter authors from diverse scholarly backgrounds provide detailed information on topics such as discrimination and social exclusion; adverse early life experiences; poor education; unemployment, underemployment, and job insecurity; income inequality, poverty, and neighborhood deprivation; food insecurity; poor housing quality and housing instability; adverse features of the built environment; and poor access to mental health care. This thought-provoking book offers many beneficial features for clinicians and public health professionals: Clinical vignettes are included, designed to make the content accessible to readers who are primarily clinicians and also to demonstrate the practical, individual-level applicability of the subject matter for those who typically work at the public health, population, and/or policy level. Policy implications are discussed throughout, designed to make the content accessible to readers who work primarily at the public health or population level and also to demonstrate the policy relevance of the subject matter for those who typically work at the clinical level. All chapters include five to six key points that focus on the most important content, helping to both prepare the reader with a brief overview of the chapter's main points and reinforce the "take-away" messages afterward. In addition to the main body of the book, which focuses on selected individual social determinants of mental health, the volume includes an in-depth overview that summarizes the editors' and their colleagues' conceptualization, as well as a final chapter coauthored by Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General of the United States, that serves as a "Call to Action," offering specific actions that can be taken by both clinicians and policymakers to address the social determinants of mental health. The editors have succeeded in the difficult task of balancing the individual/clinical/patient perspective and the population/public health/community point of view, while underscoring the need for both groups to work in a unified way to address the inequities in twenty-first century America. The Social Determinants of Mental Health gives readers the tools to understand and act to improve mental health and reduce risk for mental illnesses for individuals and communities. Students preparing for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) will also benefit from this book, as the MCAT in 2015 will test applicants' knowledge of social determinants of health. The social determinants of mental health are not distinct from the social determinants of physical health, although they deserve special emphasis given the prevalence and burden of poor mental health.
