Significant progress was made in a number of proposed research areas. The first major task in the proposal involved incorporating simulation-based optimization (and, in particular, ordinal optimization) into dynamic optimization problems. In support of this task, progress was made on new sampling methods for Markov Decision Processes (MDPs), a new time aggregation approach for MDPs, simulation-based methods for weighted cost-to-go MDPs, approaches to proving the exponential convergence rate of ordinal comparisons, approximate receding horizon approaches to MDPs and Markov games, and new classes of stochastic approximation algorithms. In support of the second major task that involved estimation and control algorithms for dynamic hierarchical and graphical models, a variety of algorithms and analytical tools were developed for models on graphs with loops that exploit embedded loop-free structure. These algorithms offer the potential of significantly enhanced solutions to a variety of optimization problems critical to the Air Force. Another major task in the proposal involved risk-sensitive estimation and control. In support of this task, a new filtering scheme for the risk-sensitive state estimation of partially observed Markov chains was introduced and analyzed.

This Proceedings book reports on new and innovative solutions regarding methodologies and applications of modeling and simulation. It includes a set of selected, extended papers from the 6th International Conference on Simulation and Modeling Methodologies, Technologies and Applications (SIMULTECH 2016), held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 29 to 31 July, 2016. The conference brought together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in methodologies and applications of modeling and simulation. SIMULTECH 2016 received 76 submissions from 35 countries and all continents. After a double-blind paper review performed by the Program Committee, 18% were accepted as full papers and thus selected for oral presentations. Additional papers were accepted as short papers and posters. A further selection was made after the Conference, based also on the assessment of presentation quality and audience interest, so that this book includes the extended and revised versions of the very best papers from SIMULTECH 2016.

Simulation Based Estimation Of Spatial Price Equilibrium Models And Market Integration written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with categories.

This dissertation explores the applicability of recently developed simulation-based econometric methods to the analysis of spatial price determination and integration of markets. As such a measure of market integration is developed within the context of well-known point-location competitive price equilibrium model. Two markets are said to be integrated to the extent that an excess demand shock arising in one region is transmitted to the other region. This model imposes the market efficiency (i.e., the law of one price) and explicitly accounts for the nonlinear relationship between prices and underlying variables. A critical distinction from most of the current literature is that market integration is defined and estimated as a degree rather than a binary outcome. Simulation-based estimation approach to spatial market integration can be outlined as follows: summarize the information contained in prices in an auxiliary (reduced) model and match the parameters of the auxiliary model obtained from observed data to the parameters of the same model obtained from simulated data. The particular estimation framework used is known as the extit[indirect inference] methodology. The auxiliary model is chosen as a finite order Gaussian vector auto-regression for prices. The underlying variables, autarky prices and transaction costs, are modelled as low-order vector auto-regression. Transaction costs on each link is modelled as a function of a small number of common factors. After the structural parameter estimates are obtained the measure of market integration is approximated by simple Monte Carlo integration methods. The results from a set of controlled experiments indicate that the estimation strategy works reasonably well. It is also shown that simulation-based estimation methods can be useful for the two-location switching regime models with serially correlated underlying variables.

Project managers tend to believe their cost estimates - whether they have exceeded budgets in the past or not. It is dangerous to accept the engineering cost estimates, which are often optimistic or unrealistic. Though cost estimates incorporate contingency reserves below-the-line, these estimates of reserves often do not benefit from a rigorous assessment of risk to project costs. Risks to cost come from multiple sources including uncertain project duration, which is often ignored in cost risk analyses. In short, experience shows that cost estimating on projects is rarely successful - cost overruns routinely occur. There are effective ways to estimate the impact on the cost of complex projects from project risks of all types, including traditional cost-type risks and the indirect but often substantial impact from risks usually thought of as affecting project schedules. Integrated cost-schedule risk anlaysis helps us determine how likely the project will go over budget with the current plan, how much contingency reserve is required to achieve a desired level of certainty, and which risks are most important so the project manager can mitigate them and achieve a better result. Integrated Cost-Schedule Risk Analysis provides solutions for these and other challenges. This book follows on from David Hulett's highly-praised Practical Schedule Risk Analysis. It focuses on the way that schedule risk can generate cost risk, and how to handle this relationship. It also applies the Risk Driver Method to the analysis so that you can clearly and transparently identify the key risks, rather than just the most risky cost line items. With detailed worked examples and over 70 illustrations, Integrated Cost-Schedule Risk Analysis offers the definitive guide to this critically important aspect of project management from surely the world's leading commentator.

The Asia Simulation Conference 2006 (JSST 2006) was aimed at exploring challenges in methodologies for modeling, control and computation in simu lation, and their applications in social, economic, and financial fields as well as established scientific and engineering solutions. The conference was held in Tokyo from October 30 to November 1, 2006, and included keynote speeches presented by technology and industry leaders, technical sessions, organized sessions, poster sessions, and vendor exhibits. It was the seventh annual inter national conference on system simulation and scientific computing, which is organized by the Japan Society for Simulation Technology (JSST), the Chi nese Association for System Simulation (CASS), and the Korea Society for Simulation (KSS). For the conference, all submitted papers were refereed by the international technical program committee, each paper receiving at least two independent reviews. After careful reviews by the committee, 65 papers from 143 submis sions were selected for oral presentation. This volume includes the keynote speakers' papers along with the papers presented at the oral sessions and the organized sessions. As a result, we are publishing 87 papers for the conference in this volume. In addition to the scientific tracts presented, the conference featured keynote presentations by five invited speakers. We are grateful to them for accepting our invitation and for their presentations. We also would like to express our gratitude to all contributors, reviewers, technical program conmiittee members, and organizing committee members who made the conference very successful.

This proceedings volume chronicles the papers presented at the 35th CIB W78 2018 Conference: IT in Design, Construction, and Management, held in Chicago, IL, USA, in October 2018. The theme of the conference focused on fostering, encouraging, and promoting research and development in the application of integrated information technology (IT) throughout the life-cycle of the design, construction, and occupancy of buildings and related facilities. The CIB – International Council for Research and Innovation in Building Construction – was established in 1953 as an association whose objectives were to stimulate and facilitate international cooperation and information exchange between governmental research institutes in the building and construction sector, with an emphasis on those institutes engaged in technical fields of research. The conference brought together more than 200 scholars from 40 countries, who presented the innovative concepts and methods featured in this collection of papers.
