The interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter has always been a fascinating subject of study. As matter in the universe is mostly in the plasma state, the study of electromagnetic waves in plasmas is of importance to astrophysics, space physics and ionospheric physics. The physics of electromagnetic wave interacting with electron beams and plasmas also serves as a basis for coherent radiation generation such as free electron laser and gyrotron and advanced accelerators. This monograph aims at reviewing the physical processes of linear and nonlinear collective interactions of electromagnetic waves with electron beams and unmagnetized plasmas.

With the advent of laser and maser, the wave-plasma interaction emerged as a major rich field of research. To explore the possibility of laser driven fusion, laser-plasma interaction became a subject of worldwide research, revealing many novel nonlinear phenomena including generation and saturation of plasma instabilities, electron acceleration, and ion Coulomb explosion. The work presented in this thesis is related to intense laser-plasma and electron beam-plasma interaction. The development of intense short pulse laser and high current, high-energy electron beams has allowed exploration of new regimes of laser and beam plasma interaction. Enormous progress has been made in inertial confinement fusion, plasma heating, X-ray lasers, free electron laser and charged particle accelerators. In these applications parametric instabilities, self-focusing, self phase modulation and other non-linear phenomena are important. The present thesis deals with these phenomena. This work is relevant to laser-driven fusion, charged particle acceleration, and laboratory plasma heating.

Nonlinear Electron-Wave Interaction Phenomena explores the interaction between drifting streams of charged particles and propagating electromagnetic waves. Of particular concern are the situations in which the wave amplitude is large and there is strong coupling between the charged fluid and the wave. Emphasis is placed on those devices that utilize a defined injected stream of some type. Particle and electromagnetic wave velocities both small and comparable to the velocity of light are considered. Comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the various classes of devices in which the drifting stream (charged fluid) is composed of electrons and/or ions coupled to a slow electromagnetic wave over an extended region. The discussion then turns to Eulerian versus Lagrangian formulation and radio-frequency equivalent circuits, along with space-charge-field expressions. Subsequent chapters focus on the interaction mechanisms in klystrons, traveling-wave amplifiers, and O-type backward-wave oscillators, as well as crossed-field forward- and backward-wave amplifiers, and traveling-wave energy converters. The book also evaluates multibeam and beam-plasma interactions; phase focusing of electron bunches; pre-bunched electron beams; collector depression techniques; and modulation characteristics. This monograph is designed to serve both as a research monograph for workers in the fields of microwave electron and plasma devices and as a text for advanced graduate students.

Physics of Intense Beams in Plasmas is a comprehensive description of the interaction between extremely intense particle beams and plasmas. The emphasis is on experimental beam-plasma physics, but the necessary theory is also explained-much of which is innovative and original. Central to the book is the discussion of beam instabilities, emphasizing their hydrodynamic nature.

The range of plasma conditions considered here is intentionally broad, systematic and relevant to such areas as plasma heating, plasma acceleration, laser-plasma interaction, and plasma confinement. This volume presents the principle concepts of plasma physics - with an account of the linear theory of electromagnetic wave interaction - and then covers nonlinear processes with extensive treatment of the pondermotive force. Related experimental work is thoroughly reviewed.

Theoretical studies were initiated on the production of bremsstrahlung radiation by electron beams injected into high-field magnets. Particular attention is devoted to the analytical description of trajectories to explore the problems of injection and reflection. A program for an IBM 709 computer is prepared to study several (over) facets of the problem. The first phase of the experimental work is aimed at testing the feasibility of injecting electron beams into highfield magnets. To this extent, a system was constructed which comprises a capacitor bank with triggering circuitry and a high-field magnet. The electron beam source, the extractor system, and a drift tube were also developed. (Author).

During the past seven years I have been involved in the investigation of high power microwave sources for accelerator and radar applications. As for many others before me, the starting point of this book was a collection of notes on theoretical topics out of the material I had been working on. The notes were the core of a course for graduate students at Cornell University. When I started to prepare these notes it seemed a fairly straight-forward and not very time-consuming task since I had most of the material well organized. Today, three years after the preparation of the first notes, I can only wonder how naive this thought was. Most of my work was oriented towards analytic and quasi-analytic tech niques for the investigation of the interaction of an electron beam with elec tromagnetic waves. These topics are presented in Chaps. 4 and 6. However, for a systematic elaboration of these topics it was necessary to provide some general background, therefore parts of what are today Chaps. 2, 3, and 5 were prepared. Related topics of acceleration concepts were also prepared to some extent but I ran out of time and the material (Chap. 8) was not delivered. In the meantime, various sections of this book were taught at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Ben-Gurion University. In the last version I included a discussion on free electron lasers (Chap. 7).
