Two computational techniques have been developed to model heterogeneous and non-equilibrium phenomena in reactive inorganic mixtures under high pressure shock wave loading. The first, known by its acronym VIR, is based on a continuum mixture theory and focused on modeling the interaction between chemical reaction and hydrodynamic flow. The second is a new computational tool called DM2 and is based on a discrete element approach. The second is primarily concerned with modeling of complex interactions of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes at the particle level on the order of micrometers. Significant findings from numerical experiments by use of these techniques include: (1) a demonstration of condensed phase detonation, (2) a mechanistic description of shock-induced chemical reactions at the particle level, (3) a model demonstration of thermal explosion in shear bands, and (4) a confirmation of new deformation and failure response of metals under high-pressure shock compression.

One of the great twentieth-century achievements in the mechanics of fluids was the full elucidation of the physics of shock waves and the later comprehensive development of understanding of how shock waves propagate (i) through otherwise undisturbed fluid and (ii) in interaction either with solid bodies or with independently generated fluid flows. The interaction problems (ii) were soon found to raise some very special difficulties (beginning with the common formation of "Mach stems" in shock-wave reflection) yet they also turned out to possess enormous scientific interest as well as being highly important in practical applications. For all these reasons the appearance of this book on "Interaction of Shock Waves" by one of the world's major contributors to knowledge in that field is most particularly to be welcomed. It covers all those approaches to the subject which have been found fruitful, and most satisfactorily goes into comprehensive detail about each. At last the important achievements of the leading research workers, experimental as well as theoretical, on shockwave interaction problems are brought together in a single convenient and well written volume. I warmly congratulate the author and the publisher on having performed, for the benefit of everyone interested in the mechanics of fluids, this immensely valuable service.

In this volume, the shock compression technology of materials is described in parallel with the latest research results and their background. In the past, this type of technology was developed in connection with military techniques by certain particular research organizations. For this reason, researchers of materials in general have had less opportunity to make use of the technology. The conventional technology of shock compression has now been established, and is recognized as being remarkably useful as a means of materials science study. The feasibility of shock compression technology is dealt with in this book, as well as the latest research results for general material scientists. The shock synthesis of ceramics and intermetallic compounds, as well as shock compression behavior, are also described. In contrast to conventional works of this kind, this book describes shock compression studies performed by material scientists.

Martin Oliver Steinhauser deals with several aspects of multiscale materials modeling and simulation in applied materials research and fundamental science. He covers various multiscale modeling approaches for high-performance ceramics, biological bilayer membranes, semi-flexible polymers, and human cancer cells. He demonstrates that the physics of shock waves, i.e., the investigation of material behavior at high strain rates and of material failure, has grown to become an important interdisciplinary field of research on its own. At the same time, progress in computer hardware and software development has boosted new ideas in multiscale modeling and simulation. Hence, bridging the length and time scales in a theoretical-numerical description of materials has become a prime challenge in science and technology.

Interaction Of Shock Waves Due To Combined Two Shear Loadings written by Stanford University. Division of Engineering Mechanics and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1968 with Shock waves categories.

The propagation of plane elastic-plastic waves due to combined two shear loadings is studied in which the materials are assumed to be elastic, isotropic work hardening. For a general strain hardening law, analytical solutions can be obtained only for simple waves and for two shear waves which are reducible to a single shear wave. If the material is elastic, linearly strain hardening, analytical solutions can also be obtained for two shear waves due to a series of step loadings and unloadings. The solution consists of shock waves propagating at constant speeds with a constant stress state between the shocks. The interaction of two or more shocks meeting at a point, and the reflection of a shock wave from a rigid surface or from an interface between two different media are studied in detail. The results can be applied to two shear waves in a plate of finite thickness which consists of two or more layers of different materials. It is shown briefly that similar results are obtained for materials with elastic, kinematical work hardening behavior. (Author).

Shock Wave Compression Of Condensed Matter written by Jerry W Forbes and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-01 with Science categories.

This book introduces the core concepts of the shock wave physics of condensed matter, taking a continuum mechanics approach to examine liquids and isotropic solids. The text primarily focuses on one-dimensional uniaxial compression in order to show the key features of condensed matter’s response to shock wave loading. The first four chapters are specifically designed to quickly familiarize physical scientists and engineers with how shock waves interact with other shock waves or material boundaries, as well as to allow readers to better understand shock wave literature, use basic data analysis techniques, and design simple 1-D shock wave experiments. This is achieved by first presenting the steady one-dimensional strain conservation laws using shock wave impedance matching, which insures conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Here, the initial emphasis is on the meaning of shock wave and mass velocities in a laboratory coordinate system. An overview of basic experimental techniques for measuring pressure, shock velocity, mass velocity, compression and internal energy of steady 1-D shock waves is then presented. In the second part of the book, more advanced topics are progressively introduced: thermodynamic surfaces are used to describe equilibrium flow behavior, first-order Maxwell solid models are used to describe time-dependent flow behavior, descriptions of detonation shock waves in ideal and non-ideal explosives are provided, and lastly, a select group of current issues in shock wave physics are discussed in the final chapter.
