Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 23. Chapters: TGV, Intercity-Express, Transmission Voie-Machine. Excerpt: The TGV (French: , meaning high-speed train) is France's high-speed rail service, currently operated by SNCF Voyages, the long-distance rail branch of SNCF, the French national rail operator. It was developed during the 1970s by GEC-Alsthom (now Alstom) and SNCF. Although originally designed to be powered by gas turbines, the TGV prototypes evolved into electric trains with the petrol crisis of 1973. Following the inaugural TGV service between Paris and Lyon in 1981, the TGV network, centred on Paris, has expanded to connect cities across France and in adjacent countries. A TGV test train set the record for the fastest wheeled train, reaching 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph) on 3 April 2007. A TGV service previously held the record for the fastest scheduled rail journey with a start to stop average speed of 279.4 km/h (173.6 mph), which was surpassed by the Chinese CRH service Harmony express on the Wuhan-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway in 2009. The success of the first line led to an expansion of the network, with new lines built in the south, west, north and east of the country. Eager to emulate the success of the French network, neighbouring countries such as Belgium, Italy, Spain and Germany built their own high-speed lines. TGVs link with Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Belgium through the French network, with Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands through the Thalys network, and the Eurostar network links France and Belgium with the United Kingdom. Several lines are planned, including extensions within France and to surrounding countries. Cities such as Tours have become a part of a "TGV commuter belt." In 2007, SNCF generated profits of 1.1 billion (approximately US$1.75 billion or 875 million) driven largely by higher margins on the TGV network. The idea of...

The ICE 3, including its variant models, is made by a consortium led by Bombardier and Siemens. Apart from domestic use, the trains can also be seen in countries neighbouring Germany. There are, for example, ICE 1 lines to Basel and Zurich. ICE 3 trains also run to Liege and Brussels and at lower speeds to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. On 10 June 2007, a new line between Paris and Frankfurt/Stuttgart was opened, jointly operated by ICE and TGV trains. While ICE 3M run the Paris-to-Frankfurt branch (with exceptions to trains 9553/9552, which operates with TGV POS equipment and cross-crewed with both SNCF and DB staff), SNCF's TGV runs from Paris to Munich (via Stuttgart), with mixed crews on both trains. German and Austrian ICE T trains run to Vienna. On 9 December 2007, the ICE TD was introduced on the service from Berlin via...

Shinkansen Versus Intercity Express Which Net Work Is More Suitable For Texas written by Christian Budow and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023 with categories.

Texas is the fastest-growing state in the United States by population and economy. Its existing transportation infrastructure cannot keep up with the pace of growth, leading to increased con-gestion problems. Texas Central proposes a high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston as a solution. This paper researches if this proposal can solve congestion between Dallas and Hou-ston and, in a larger context, Texas. First, it examines the existing passenger traffic flows and predicts the ridership for a passenger rail network. Then it compares the Japanese and the German approach to high-speed rail. While Japan created a monocentric network, Germany built a polycentric one. The thesis will compare both systems and discusses how their different method to the structure applies to Texas. This paper aims to bring a deeper understanding of high-speed rail networks to Texas and how a sustainable transportation system utilizes all available modes.
