La lengua de señas es la herramienta comunicativa de las personas sordas. Ella permite no sólo el desarrollo cognitivo y lingüístico de estos niños, sino además la transmisión de una cultura cargada de historia. Es evidente que su carácter visual se asocia a la pérdida de audición del sujeto sordo. Sin embargo también es evidente su fuerte carácter icónico y metafórico, que devela su riqueza lingüística y fuerte sustento en la corporalidad. Este último también se encuentra presente en la estructuración del lenguaje oral. Si aceptamos que sordos y oyentes presentan experiencias corporales comunes y que ambas lenguas son metafóricas, se podría sugerir la idea de que las dos culturas presentan algunos elementos que pudieran ser comunes. Visto así, el desafío apunta a la búsqueda de tales elementos, fortaleciendo la instauración de una Educación Intercultural Bilingüe tanto para el niño sordo como oyente. Donde se valore el potencial del niño oyente para acceder a la Lengua de Señas dado su carácter visual, icónico y metafórico. Este libro aborda la temática desde lo teórico y empírico, analizando tanto la experiencia en Lengua de Señas como su relación con la Interculturalidad.
