Encyclopedic Dictionary Of Roman Law written by Adolf Berger and has been published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Latin language categories.

A comprehensive reference that includes a useful English-Latin law glossary and an extensive bibliography (centered on English-language publications) that covers all of the dictionary's topics. A formidable research tool. Originally published: Philadelphia: The American Philosophical Society, [1953] (Transactions of the American Philosophical Society; New Series, Volume 43, Part 2, 1953). [ii], 333-808 pp. "This dictionary is intended to meet the needs of the student with little or no knowledge of Roman law or indeed of Latin. It seeks to provide a brief picture of Roman legal institutions and sources as a sort of first introduction to them. A very large number of brief-usually very brief-entries provide explanations of Roman legal terms, civil and criminal, and summary accounts of the sources. This is a formidable task to undertake single-handed, and Dr. Berger is to be congratulated on the great learning and thoroughness with which he has carried it through. ... The work ends with a remarkable general bibliography listing some fifteen hundred works under headings ranging from the main divisions of the law to 'Christianity and Roman Law' and 'Roman law in non-juristic sources.' This last is particularly valuable."--BARRY NICHOLAS 44 Journal of Roman Studies 160 (1954) "The publication of Mr. Adolf Berger's encyclopedic dictionary of Roman law is a very important accomplishment in the recent history of American legal scholarship. The American legal world owes him homage for putting at its disposal the scholarship of twentieth-century European Romanism, or indicating the entrances thereto." --MITCHELL FRANKLIN 28 Tulane Law Review 412 (1953-1954)

The respondent was flagged down by a police officer. He declined to stop. The police gave chase and managed to stop and arrest him. At the police station where he was detained he was given a form “SAPD 14A” with the heading “Notice of rights in terms of the Constitution”. In terms of the form he was being detained for failing to comply with the instruction of a “traffic officer”, “crimen injuria” and driving an “unlicensed and unregistered motor”. The respondent's wife approached the High Court to try and secure the release of the respondent. In a supporting affidavit, she asserted that if the court decided to grant bail, she could afford R500.00 as to bail. Counsel for the respondent indicated that what was before court was not a bail application but a request for the court to consider an interdictum de homine libero exhibendo. The attorney testified that his client was arrested for “negligent and reckless driving” and that the normal procedure was that “one gets a fine of R500 or R1000”. The court ordered the immediate release of the respondent and ordered the applicants to inter alia provide written reasons as to why the respondent was not given bail, or an opportunity to apply for bail, and why he was not given an opportunity to pay a fine.

Roman law forms an important part of the intellectual background of many legal systems currently in force in continental Europe, Latin America and other parts of the world. This book traces the historical development of Roman law from the earliest period of Roman history up to and including Justinian's codification in the sixth century AD. It examines the nature of the sources of law, forms of legal procedure, the mechanisms by which legal judgments were put into effect, the development of legal science and the role of the jurists in shaping the law. The final chapter of the book outlines the history of Roman law during the Middle Ages and discusses the way in which Roman law furnished the basis of the civil law systems of continental Europe. The book combines the perspectives of legal history with those of social, political and economic history. Special attention is given to the political development of the Roman society and to the historical events and socio-economic factors that influenced the growth and progress of the law. Designed to provide a general introduction to the history of Roman law, this book will appeal to law students whose course of studies includes Roman law, legal history and comparative law. It will also prove of value to students and scholars interested in ancient history and classics.
