Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Heute, im Zeitalter der europäischen Einigung, ist es selbstverständlich, von der deutsch-französischen Freundschaft zu reden, mit dem Begriff zu kokettieren und möglicherweise auch manches zu beschönigen. Im 19. Jahrhundert war eine solche Haltung jedoch noch alles andere als selbstverständlich. Als ein früher Vorkämpfer des Europa-Gedankens ist der Dichter und Journalist Heinrich Heine aufgetreten, der schon früh für eine Aussöhnung zwischen den damals verfeindeten Nationen Deutschland und Frankreich kämpfte. Er sah es als große Aufgabe seines Lebens an, die Verständigung zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich voranzutreiben. Dies bekannte er unmißverständlich in seinem Testament von 1851. Hierbei könnte man sich fragen, inwieweit diese Äußerung Heines, der sich selbst in einem Brief vom 26.6.1854 an Julius Campe als „Meister der Ironie“ bezeichnete, wirklich ernst gemeint ist. Deswegen soll die vorliegende Arbeit zeigen, daß Heine in seinen essayistischen und publizistischen Schriften tatsächlich darauf abzielt, ein positives Verhältnis zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich zu befördern. Während im ersten Teil der Arbeit dargestellt wird, wie er seinen französischen Lesern ein bestimmtes Bild von Deutschland und seinen deutschen Lesern von Frankreich zeichnet, werden im zweiten Teil bestimmte Aspekte dieser Bilder in seiner HugoKritik nachgewiesen. Dabei soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, inwieweit er als Intermediator fungiert. Denn über Deutschland- und Frankreichbilder in Heines HugoKritik liegt meines Wissens bislang noch keine eigene Publikation vor. In seinen publizistischen und essayistischen Schriften der 30er, 40er und 50er Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts zeichnet Heine von Frankreich ein Bild, das einerseits historische und politische, andererseits kulturelle Aspekte berücksichtigt. Einen wichtigen Gegenstand seiner Kulturkritik stellt die zeitgenössische französische Literatur dar, und einer ihrer bedeutendsten damaligen Vertreter ist Victor Hugo. Bei einer genaueren Analyse, wie sie in der vorliegenden Arbeit durchgeführt werden soll, wird sich zeigen, in welcher Weise er auch hier seiner selbstgewählten Mission als Intermediator nachkommt. This original study examines the interrelationship between the construction of national identity and the transformation of political thought in Germany before the First World War. During the decade or so before the war, the German Empire was challlenged openly by both left and right for the first time since the 1870s. Paradoxically, however, this pre-war crisis of Germanys system of government occurred during a period of increasing nationalism, which created a solid cross-party basis of support for the Empire as a nation-state. This pioneering study argues that Wilhelmine debates about the reform of the German Empire can only be understood in the context of a broader discussion and comparison of European and American political regimes which took place in Germany after the turn of the century. In such contemporary debates about a German Sonderwag, France remained a principal point of reference because French-style parliamentarism had come to be viewed as the main alternative to German constitutionalism. By analysing Wilhelmine depictions of the Third Republic, Dr Hewitson revises accepted interpretations of German politics and nationalism.
