Excerpt from Intermediate Essential Principles Tms book is for boys and girls who can use numbers into the thousands in addition and subtraction, who know what ratio is and understand something about fractions, who know some facts of measures, and who have studied the multipli cation tables. For these boys and girls there is here about two years' work, chiefly in practice, partly in extension of knowledge. The new topics introduced here are direct outgrow the of earlier topics, and are presented in their simplest forms and relations. Ratio develops into proportion, and proportion into equation. The common fraction is correlated with percentage, with the decimal, and with ratio and proportion. Factoring is centered upon dividing, and cancellation is centered upon both. The method of long division is explained. A few pages are devoted to each of two topics, greatest common divisor and least common multiple. But the emphasis of the book is upon the fundamental operations of addition and subtraction, multi plication and division for drill, and upon fractions and meas ures for development of arithmetical knowledge and skill. The advanced topics include the multiplication and division of fractions by fractions and of decimals by decimals, the princi ples of the fundamental operations and processes, very simple measuring by geometric methods, a series of exercises in United States money, and a brief treatment of simple interest. This book is more nearly topical in arrangement than the Primary Book of this Series; but an essentially spiral char acter is secured by frequent reviews. Excerpt from Intermediate Physics When arranging a course Of instruction for intermediate students, most Of whom willinot proceed _with the study Of Physics beyond this stage, one is met with the di iculty that the range Of subjects which may be dealt with is so great. This diculty is continually increasing since the applications of physical principles to engineering and the like are con tinually being extended, as for example in the case Of wireless-telegraphy, and at the same time new branches Of Physics, such as radio-activity, are being developed. In either case the student rightly expects that even in an intermediate course such subjects should not be ignored. The result of such extensions is that the teacher has either to attempt to cover all the ground, and hence owing to limitations Of time can only deal very superficially with the various subjects, or he has to limit the number Of subjects which he will consider. The author believes that this latter alternative is the better one, and that a considerable number Of the simpler physical phenomena which it has been usual to include in an intermediate course can with advantage be omitted, or at any rate dealt with very briefly; the time thus saved being employed in examining a little more in detail some Of the other branches. In this book he has attempted to carry out this idea, so that although it will be found that the number of physical phenomena considered is not quite as large as is Often the case in works Of a similar scope, yet some branches are carried a little beyond what is generally considered the intermediate stage. In selecting the parts to be extended in this way the author has had in View the requirements Of engineering, medical and other students, who will, to a certain extent, have to apply physical principles in their subsequent studies. He feels that in this way the gap which at present is apt to exist between the course in Physics taken, say, by an engineering student, and the applications Of physical principles he meets with in his engineering reading will be reduced, and at the same time the interest of the student will be better maintained than when he is introduced to a large mass of physical phenomena which, when only examined in a very elementary manner, must appear more or less disconnected. The pages on mechanics do not profess to give a complete account Of the subject, only those problems being included which are required when dealing with the more physical problems considered in the main part of the book. Excerpt from Lectures on the Principles of Surgery It is scarcely necessary to observe that causes differ greatly among themselves. It would be absurd to confound the principle of heat, the expansion of steam, and the machinery by which the power thus generated acts, as causes of the same kind. The remote and the proximate cause in such a case have no immediate relation, but are connected together by a number of intermediate circumstances which, like the steps of an argument, unite the conclusion to the premises. It is very necessary to bear this in mind in physiological reasoning, in consequence of our almost total ignorance of these intermediate links in the chain of causation. In the instance above adduced by the author, we have no knowledge of the mode in which the poison of a rabid animal, or the poison of syphilis, produce their efl'ects on the animal body nor how mercury and other medicines should tend to eradicate the latter from the constitution. We are unable in these cases to advance a step further than to perceive the necessity of absorption of the poison, after which all is conjecture. A full perception of the whole sequence of effects would doubtless at once discover the precise nature of the remedy, as well as the proper cases in which it should be administered.
