Excerpt from Internal Combustion Engine Manual In an effort to present briefly and clearly the Internal Combustion Engine problem to the uninitiated,, the author has compiled the data in this volume. It has been the endeavor to eliminate all obsolete practice, to put forth the best modern practice, and to illustrate all points by up-to-date commercial examples. After close study of the conditions existing in the Internal Combustion Engine course at the U.S. Naval Academy, and after voluminous reading to discover the best general method of presenting the subject, the following was thought the best sequence to follow: (a) The subject of fuels is first treated fully, this being the fundamental element that governs design and operation. These fuels follow in a natural sequence which order is preserved when carburetion is taken up in Chapter V. (b) The engine proper naturally divides itself into four systems: (1) fuel system,(2) ignition system,(3) cooling system,(4) lubrication system. These are treated in detail in the above order and in Chapter X the four systems assembled are illustrated by modern commercial engines. (c)Producer plants being closely allied to gas engines are given a short chapter at the end of the book. This volume being primarily intended as a text-book for mid-shipmen is necessarily limited in its scope by the time allowed for this course in the Naval Academy curriculum. This necessitates brevity and is responsible for many arbitrary statements contained herein. The endeavor has been to limit these to the closest approximation to the best practices where fuller explanation would extend the book to impossible limits. The author wishes to thank the various manufacturers for the illustrations used in Chapter X, and the Hill Publishing Company for permission to reproduce some of the figures in Chapter XI. Excerpt from Audels Gas Engine Manual: A Practical Treatise Relating to the Theory and Management of Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines, Including Chapters on Producer Gas Plants, Marine Motors and Automobile Engines A complete study of the gas engine problem would involve consideration of the two general classes of motors operated by the expansive energy of combustible gases, namely - piston engines with reciprocating action, and turbine engines with rotary motion. Conditions relating to the latter, however, are in such an experimental stage, that very little of practical interest can be stated about them at the present time. On the other hand, the various types of piston engine have been developed to a stage of high efficiency, and, therefore, will be exclusively considered in this work, with occasional references to the other type for the purpose of comparative illustration. The gas engine belongs to the general class of motors which convert natural energy existing in the form of heat into mechanical energy, which is subsequently utilized for the performance st* useful work. These motors are usually called heat engines, and may be divided into two general classes, according to the manner in which the heat is applied to the working substance of the engine, as follows: 1. External combustion engines, driven by the expansive energy of steam or air heated from an external source through the walls of (lie vessel containing the working substance, such as the various types of steam and hot air engines. Originally published in 1913, Clarence Floyd Hirshfield's book Gas Engines for the Farm was likely unique upon its release. The book is intended to be a buyer's manual to be used by farmer's considering the purchases of a gas engine. As mechanical power would have been a relatively new advantage for a farmer in 1913, literature on the subject was presumably scarce, and thus this book was intended to fill that gap. Early chapters cover the basics of a gas-powered engine, including appropriate fuels and the operational principles and design of an internal combustion engine. Comparisons are made between the steam engine and the gas-powered engine in order to illuminate some of the important differences. Later chapters wade more deeply into the specifics of an engine's operation and upkeep, presenting information on the cooling system, carburetors, the ignition apparatus, mufflers, and more. This volume is truly a treasure chest of early information on gas-powered farm equipment. The final chapters of the book are essentially the buyer's guide. Hirshfeld identifies desirable features of construction, the brands that one should consider, and finally examines how to best balance power, speed, and price. There is no doubt that one would be better prepared to make a large purchase after reading this manual. Read today, this book is primarily a pleasant trip back in time. While the fundamentals of the internal combustion engine have not changed in 100 years, the advancements in power and speed have been significant. The early chapters of this book are thus still relevant today; however, the latter chapters are most definitely out of date.
