The chapters in this volume study transnational social relationships and cross-border connections between ‘ordinary’ people that arise from the increasingly large-scale mobilities and migrations between Thailand and ‘the West’. While Thai and Western people’s social relationships are usually studied as personal stories within a cross-border marriage migration perspective, this book considers it necessary to see them as more than marriage migration. Even though a focus on the ‘personal life stories’ of marriage migrants provides valuable insights, it can also mask consideration of the structural context of socially embedded cross- border connections and exchanges, as well as state restrictions, that, first, make people’s decisions to move a possibility in the first place, and second, shape a migrant’s post- migration life- trajectory and experiences, relative to others in their origin and settlement societies. The chapters on Thai women who marry and move with older Western men, Western men and women who move to Thailand to retire or for leisure, and Thai rural families transformed by mobilities and migration, try to draw out their gendered experiences of transnational living. The individual choices that shaped these lives, and the surprising prevalence of lives like these in Thailand and abroad, needs to be understood within context as an outcome of the specific globalisation processes that have shaped Thailand through transnational links to other parts of the world over the last decades. Globalisation and penetration by foreign capital, cultures, and people through mass tourism is key to this explanatory backstory as well as the internal rural/ urban cleavages that drive Thailand’s economic development. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Data for this study of migration is based on a survey conducted among 97 Baan Naa Sakae households in northeastern Thailand in 1990 and ethnographic field work conducted in 1989. The study describes the influence of modernity and migration on gender relations and households and the adjustment of rural female migrants in Bangkok Metropolis. For women, the attraction of the city brings the illusion of beauty, modernity, and mobility. Beauty in Thailand is based on lightness of skin color, and urban employment offers work inside safe from the darkening rays of the sun. Social status is also enhanced at home when remittances are sent. The urban setting challenges concepts. Beauty traditionally is based on women's sexual propriety and modesty, while urban centered culture links beauty with modernity and active sexuality. There is personal autonomy, but few opportunities to realize the glamour. Most jobs entail low wages and insecurity, and there is always pressure from home for remittances. Masculinity does not have the restrictions because of higher wages. Women from Baan Naa Sakae frequently move in small groups in order to seek work in Bangkok. The move is made when the rice harvest is over. Motives can be the need for cash, desire for modernity, and emotional and moral obligations. Women maintain wage work not just for money but for achieving social goals. Personal contact with someone returning from Bangkok can act as a catalyst. A sense of duty and adventure are involved in the decision to move. Work can be very demanding with changing shifts over a 24 hour period. The loneliness and limited autonomy clash with the glamorous images of independence and adventure. Relationships with employers are based on a form of paternalism, but workers are clearly aware of wages. Remittances are rarely regular. The lure of consumer culture is strong; leisure involves outings and wearing jeans. The low status in the city is offset by their higher status in their rural home for providing remittances. Migrant women are caught between being modern women and being good daughters. Marriage offers no choice. Women must negotiate shifts in geographic space, identities, and social relations.

Transnational labor migration often begins with the dream of securing a more stable and prosperous future, a chance to survive. The lure of “global cities” as a place to attain that dream looms large within the context of rural-urban migration flows. This book reveals some of the complex phenomena and processes that strip bare the lives and dreams of migrant workers living abroad, whose life experiences are overwhelmingly dominated by stress and suffering and diminished gendered roles. The book illuminates the intimate aspects of how Thai male migrants have transcended their harsh reality while living under Singapore’s strict regulations governing foreign workers. Stripped bare of the powerful sociocultural, economic, and legal processes that govern their existence at home, these men must recraft their gendered selfhoods, identities, and sensibilities. Using personal and interpretive ethnography, the book explores how popular music, sports, religious beliefs, cultural traditions, sexual desire, and intimacy are refashioned by appropriating cultural and symbolic capital into new cultural experiences. It also provides an extensive look at the sudden unexplained nocturnal death syndrome (SUNDS) among young healthy Thai construction workers in Singapore. The author’s in-depth analyses of migrant social life and male migrant gendered identitynegotiating processes provide an invaluable contribution to our understanding of labor transnationalism in the Southeast Asian context. Highlights An important contribution to studies of the masculinization of migration Provides ample insight into the lived experience of migrant workers Explores an often forgotten side of labor migration, that of sexual intimacy Adds a rich, detailed understanding of “village transnationalism”
