International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8th every year. This day is dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all over the world. It is also an opportunity to draw attention to the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women's rights across the globe. Throughout history, women have had to fight for their right to vote, to receive an education, to work outside of the home, and to be treated equally under the law. While progress has been made, there is still a long way to go before women are truly equal to men in all areas of life. International Women's Day is a reminder of both how far we've come and how far we still have to go. By bringing attention to the challenges faced by women and celebrating their victories, we can all work towards a more equitable and just world. The theme for International Women's Day 2021 is "Choose to Challenge". This theme encourages everyone to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. It is a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a more gender-equal world. The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the gender inequalities that still exist in our society. Women make up the majority of frontline workers and healthcare professionals, but they also face the burden of caring for children and elderly family members at home. Domestic violence rates have also increased during the pandemic, showing how important it is to continue fighting for women's rights. On International Women's Day, we can choose to challenge these inequalities and work towards creating a more equal and just world for everyone.

Worlds of Women is a groundbreaking exploration of the "first wave" of the international women's movement, from its late nineteenth-century origins through the Second World War. Making extensive use of archives in the United States, England, the Netherlands, Germany, and France, Leila Rupp examines the histories and accomplishments of three major transnational women's organizations to tell the story of women's struggle to construct a feminist international collective identity. She addresses questions central to the study of women's history--how can women across the world forge bonds, sometimes even through conflict, despite their differences?--and questions central to world history--is internationalism viable and how can its history be written? Rupp focuses on three major organizations that were technically open to all women: the broadly based and cautious International Council of Women, founded in 1888; the feminist International Alliance of Women, originally called the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, founded in 1904; and the vanguard Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, which grew out of the International Congress of Women that met at The Hague in 1915. The histories of these organizations, and their stories of cooperation and competition, shed new light on the international women's movement. They also help us to understand the different but connected story of the second wave of international feminism that emerged from the ashes of World War II.

Most governments and global political organizations have been dominated by male leaders and structures that institutionalize male privilege. As Women and Gender in International History reveals, however, women have participated in and influenced the traditional concerns of international history even as they have expanded those concerns in new directions. Karen Garner provides a timely synthesis of key scholarship and establishes the influential roles that women and gender power relations have wielded in determining the course of international history. From the early-20th century onward, women have participated in state-to-state relations and decisions about when to pursue diplomacy or when to go to war to settle international conflicts. Particular women, as well as masculine and feminine gender role constructs, have also influenced the establishment and evolution of intergovernmental organizations and their political, social and economic policy making regimes and agencies. Additionally, feminists have critiqued male-dominated diplomatic establishment and intergovernmental organizations and have proposed alternative theories and practices.
