Die unterschiedlichen Auspragungen reichen vom einfachen IPTV uber Computer oder Handy bis hin zu speziellen Endgeraten, bei denen der Benutzer gar nicht bemerkt, dass er das Internet dazu nutzt, weil er uber den Fernseher eine Set-Top-Box bedient wie etwa bei Apple TV oder T-Home Media Receiver 300. Der Begriff IPTV wird nicht einheitlich verwendet. Nachfolgend die bekanntesten Definitionen: Frankreich galt im Juni 2008 mit 8,5 Millionen IPTV Kunden im Vergleich zu 6 Millionen Kunden fur Kabelfernsehen als grosster IPTV Markt, auch aufgrund der geringen technischen Reichweite von Kabelfernsehen (nur 1/4 der Haushalte werden erreicht) und der vergleichsweise geringen Programmvielfalt im DVB-T Angebot. Auch in Hongkong haben die Nutzerzahlen von IPTV jene des Kabelfernsehens uberholt. Im Vergleich dazu empfangen in Deutschland nur 0,4 % aller Fernsehhaushalte bzw. 1 % aller Breitbandhaushalte IPTV. This book deals with the Internet’s influence on television. The traditional value chain has been transformed, giving rise to new forms of television that foster user generated content. We no longer dream about interactivity, but participation. Accordingly, the “digital natives” like to tag programs and films in the cyberspace, each conveniently tagged so that other users can find it. Although many questions have yet to be answered, this decade’s motto may be “the tag is the medium”. However, on-demand television is unlikely to replace mass TV. The Web 2.0 has brought an end to the “my TV” concept of the dotcom age and may put “our TV” in its place. These changes pose serious problems. The industry is facing the real threat of revenue cannibalization because current online business models are not financially rewarding. The Internet is not yet a profitable market for programs that require additional revenues to advertising. To date, the box office, video and premium television have been the main sources of revenue of the audiovisual industry. This book explores the factors at play in this shift.

Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: maxdome. Alles zu meiner Zeit. Dieser Slogan bringt die Zukunft des Fernsehens auf den Punkt. Mit der neuen Technologie des IPTV werden die Handlungsmöglichkeiten aller Akteure auf dem Fernsehmarkt revolutioniert. Das Fernsehverhalten verschiebt sich zunehmend vom passiven Zuschauer zum aktiven Anwender. Die Idee des aktiven bzw. interaktiven Nutzers in Bezug auf das Medium Fernsehen ist keineswegs neu. Bereits in den 80iger Jahren wurde mittels des Bildschirmtextes (Btx) versucht, den Nutzer aktiv in das Programmgeschehen einzubinden. Doch die angestrebten Nutzerzahlen wurden nicht annähernd erreicht. Im Laufe der Jahre gab es weitere Pilotprojekte, Ideen und Konzepte den Nutzer in das Programm zu integrieren. Doch bis heute konnte sich keine interaktive Technologie für das Fernsehen durchsetzen. Eine neue Technologie, die das jetzt erreichen könnte, ist das Internet Protocol Television, kurz IPTV. Nicht zuletzt deshalb wird IPTV in Fachkreisen als eine neue Ära, gleichzustellen mit der Erfindung des Farbfernsehens, betitelt. Der erwartete Erfolg lässt in Deutschland jedoch bis jetzt auf sich warten. Bisher sind es lediglich 300 000 Haushalte, die diesen neuen Dienst nutzen. Trotz dieser schleppenden Anlaufphase fallen die Prognosen keinesfalls negativ aus. Marktforscher stützen ihre Aussagen auf den Erfolg von IPTV im Ausland. Denn in Frankreich, Spanien und den Vereinigten Staaten gehört das interaktive Fernsehen bereits zum Alltag. Erstmals treten durch den neuen Übertragungsweg über das Telefonkabel Telekommunikationsanbieter als Akteure au dem neuen Fernsehmarkt auf. Sie sind bis jetzt die ersten, die das IP-basierte Fernsehen in deutsche Haushalte übertragen. Es kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass die Umrüstung der Fernsehkabelnetze hin zu bidirektionalen Verbindungswegen dazu führt, dass die Kabelnetzbetreiber künftig ebenfalls IPTV Dienste anbieten werden. Bis jetzt hat die Aufrüstung der Verbindungswege erhebliche Kosten bei allen Beteiligten produziert. Die kommenden Jahre werden zeigen, ob sich diese Investitionen gelohnt haben. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es sein, IPTV in Deutschland näher zu beleuchten. Dabei sollen folgende Fragen beantwortet werden: Was genau ist IPTV? Es entwickelt sich mehr und mehr zu einer Unterhaltungsplattform. Fester Bestandteil hierbei ist die Videotechnologie. Die Streaming-Technologien machen das Internet zu einer Werbeplattform für den Consumer-Bereich. Jedoch sind sie für die breite Masse noch nicht ausgereift, denn dafür fehlen derzeit noch die erforderlichen Bandbreiten und leistungsfähige Videoserver (Stand: 1999). Man kann davon ausgehen, dass die Entwickler in den nächsten Jahren weitere Fortschritte bei den Komprimierungsverfahren machen. Wollte man in der Vergangenheit über das Internet Musik-Tracks oder Video-Clips übertragen, so musste man erst die komplette Datei herunterladen, um sie anschließend mit einem Media Player abzuspielen. Das war zum einen sehr zeitaufwendig und zum anderen wusste man erst hinterher, ob sich der Aufwand gelohnt hat. Mit Streaming-Verfahren ist es möglich, im World Wide Web Multimediadaten in Echtzeit zu übertragen. Derzeit haben sich drei Verfahren durchgesetzt ( RealMedia von RealNetworks; Windows Media von Microsoft; QuickTime von Appel). Klickt man auf einen Streaming Media-Link innerhalb einer Website dauert es nur wenige Sekunden, bis der zugehörige Media Player startet und die ersten Töne und Bilder produziert. Während der Übertragung werden ständig neue Daten nachgeschoben. Damit sind auch Live-Übertragungen von Radio- und TV-Programmen möglich.
