Apart from collective memories of lived experiences, much of the modern world’s historical sense comes from written sources stored in the archives of the world, and some scholars in the not-so-distant past have described unlettered civilizations as “peoples without history.” In Praise of the Ancestors is a revisionist interpretation of early colonial accounts that reveal incongruities in accepted knowledge about three Native groups. Susan Elizabeth Ramírez reevaluates three case studies of oral traditions using positional inheritance—a system in which names and titles are inherited from one generation by another and thereby contribute to the formation of collective memories and a group identity. Ramírez begins by examining positional inheritance and perpetual kinship among the Kazembes in central Africa from the eighteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Next, her analysis moves to the Native groups of the Iroquois Confederation and their practice of using names to memorialize remarkable leaders in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Finally, Ramírez surveys naming practices of the Andeans, based on sixteenth-century manuscript sources and later testimonies found in Spanish and Andean archives, questioning colonial narratives by documenting the use of this alternative system of memory perpetuation, which was initially unrecognized by the Spaniards. In the process of reexamining the histories of Native peoples on three continents, Ramírez broaches a wider issue: namely, understanding of the nature of knowledge as fundamental to understanding and evaluating the knowledge itself.

La acción de la joven hija de Edipo que entierra a su hermano Polinices a pesar de la expresa prohibición real, la rebeldía de una mujer que arrastra consigo la turbulenta historia de su linaje, ha permitido replantear cuestiones esenciales de la existencia humana todavía vigentes. Antígona alumbra aún hoy problemas tales como la cuestión del derecho al duelo –allí donde hay todavía muertos sin enterrar o desaparecidos a los que no les ha sido restituida su dignidad simbólica–, experiencias como la muerte del otro, así como la decisión de la muerte propia consentida, la cuestión tan debatida hoy en torno a la fraternidad como cimiento de lo común, y aun la temática del género que las filosofías feministas de la diferencia se hanpropuesto repensar a partir de esta obstinada figura. Los textos que constituyen el presente volumen tratan de dar cuenta de las diversas aproximaciones que la tragedia de Antígona ha suscitado.

From majestic Amazonian macaws and highland Andean hawks to tiny colorful tanagers and tall flamingos, birds and their feathers played an important role in the Inka empire. Claudia Brosseder uncovers the many meanings that Inkas attached to the diverse fowl of the Amazon, the eastern Andean foothills, and the highlands. She shows how birds and feathers shaped Inka politics, launched wars, and initiated peace. Feathers provided protection against unpredictable enemies, made possible communication with deities, and brought an imagined Inka past into a political present. Richly textured contexts of feathered objects recovered from Late Horizon archaeological records and from sixteenth- and seventeenth-century accounts written by Spanish interlocutors enable new insights into Inka visions of interspecies relationships, an Inka ontology, and Inka views of the place of the human in their ecology. Inka Bird Idiom invites reconsideration of the deep intellectual ties that connected the Amazon and the mountain forests with the Andean highlands and the Pacific coast.

Potosí (today Bolivia) was the major supplier for the Spanish Empire and for the world and still today boasts the world's single-richest silver deposit. This book explores the political economy of silver production and circulation illuminating a vital chapter in the history of global capitalism. It travels through geology, sacred spaces, and technical knowledge in the first section; environmental history and labor in the second section; silver flows, the heterogeneous world of mining producers, and their agency in the third; and some of the local, regional, and global impacts of Potosí mining in the fourth section. The main focus is on the establishment of a complex infrastructure at the site, its major changes over time, and the new human and environmental landscape that emerged for the production of one of the world ́s major commodities: silver. Eleven authors from different countries present their most recent research based on years of archival research, providing the readers with cutting-edge scholarship. Hace poco, apenas el sábado 9 de septiembre de 2006, el editorial del periódico de mayor circulación en Colombia, El tiempo anunció la visita de mamos de la sierra nevada de santa marta al Banco interamericano de desarrollo , Según el diario los indígenas Buscaban restablecer el equilibrio ecológico de la sierra, en su calidad de representantes de una cultura " que desde hace siglos convive armónicamente con la naturaleza"En opinión del editorialista, no había mejor testimonio de esta verdad que ciudad perdida, ese extraordinario poblado prehispánico del que aún aprendían "lecciones de ecología los estudiosos" la noticia aparecio unas semanas antes de una columna del mismo periódico en la que se sugería que el ministro del medio ambiente debía ser nativo porque los indígenas habían demostrado " a lo largo de miles de años que saben convivircon la naturaleza" y que ellos mejor que nadie conocían dónde se debían construir carreteras y represas( el tiempo 18 de marzo de 2007). Pocos días antes del editorial del tiempo se había se había publicado en un periódico ( 4 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 2006) una feliz noticia: veinticinco ancianos procedentes de diversas tribus se reuniran en Bacata, nombre antiguo de la capital de Colombia.

La mita minera fue una de las prácticas más importantes de la era colonial, tanto en el aspecto económico y social como en el simbólico. Ella implicó la migración forzada, aunque temporal, de la población india a un lugar desconocido y para un tipo de trabajo duro y peligroso. Así, la mita minera ha permanecido hasta hoy en la memoria de los pueblos andinos como una de las marcas más hondas y sangrantes de dicha época. En este libro, la historiadora Paula C. Zagalsky enfoca las estrategias de los visisa, un grupo aymara integrante de la nación Qaraqara, establecido al sur de Potosí, en la actual Bolivia, para encarar la imposición de la mita. Este libro tiene como meta analizar las huellas que dejan los acontecimientos pasados sobre nuestro presente. Su autor, François Jaran, se apoya en la reflexión hermenéutica de Wilhelm Dilthey y en los planteamientos fenomenológicos del joven Martin Heidegger para argumentar que nuestra experiencia de la historia no proviene de una interpretación meramente subjetiva de la realidad. Dejando atrás el marco epistemológico desde el cual la filosofía de la historia suele elaborarse, este ensayo adopta una perspectiva decididamente ontológica y busca entender lo que significa que un ente sea a la vez real e histórico. En efecto, el análisis de los entes históricos permite mostrar que algunas de las cosas que nos rodean contienen referencias al pasado que no son proyectadas por el sujeto cognoscente. Las preguntas que dejó en suspenso la obra inacabada de Heidegger son una invitación en este ensayo para establecer relaciones con autores posteriores, Robin G. Collingwood y Paul Ricœur, quiénes ofrecen interesantes pistas para comprender el fenómeno de la huella. De esta manera, esta obra presenta un original cuestionamiento ontológico que sigue al intento heideggeriano de romper con la primacía de la presencia y permite repensar el vínculo que une el ser al tiempo.
