This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ...but sing them. If you stop to try and equalise your crotchetvalues, before you know where you are the lilt of the song has picked you up and hustled you along like a bottle in a mill-race. Allegretto grazioso. .. poco rit. Blos-som by bloa-som, pe-tal by pe-tal. is a delightful example of the composer's cunning. "Blossom" and "petal" are both trochees; but there is a subtle difference in the time-duration of the first foot of each. The first syllable of "petal" has in speech a tendency to drop from its perch a little quicker than that of "blossom." That tendency the composer has put for you in black and white. He has taken the very bit out of your mouth, for you wanted to do that yourself! But because "petal" is a little different from "blossom" it doesn't follow that "blossom" is different from "petal"--comparatively speaking. Breathes there a prig with soul so dead who would speak of "blos-som"? (If the composer had considered him normal, or even sporadic, he might no doubt have provided for him in anticipation with equal ease.) Through the whole song (as in the poem by Alfred Perceval Graves), with all its delightful modern spontaneity, runs a feeling of the classics, a beauty of outline, of Greek art, of the very spirit of the Greek anthology to which the poem owes its being. The word bel canto is applied simply to the style of its technique; the song is an art-song in its truest sense. The modern florid song is practically non-existent. The florid songs of any period are too taken up with their own "floridity" to bother about prosody or metre; the two things are essentially incompatible. In the modern rhythmical song the singer...

The Bhagavad-Gita is probably the most popular - and certainly the most frequently quoted and widely studied - work of the Hindu scriptures. This book investigates the relationship between the various interpretations of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Hindu tradition. Taking into account a range of influential Indian and western thinkers to illustrate trends in writing about the Bhagavad-Gita including Western academic; Indian activist; Christian theological; Hindu universalist; perennialist mystical and contemporary experiental accounts. Examining the ideas of such influential figures as F Max Muller, M K Ghandi, Bede Griffiths, Swami Vivekananda, Aldous Huxley and Swami Bhakivedanta, this book demonstrates the inextricable link between different interpretations of the Bhagavad-Gita and images of the Hindu tradition. This accessible book aptly demonstrates the relevance of the Bhagavad-Gita for an understanding of Hinduism as a modern phenomenon.

British Music And Literary Context written by Michael Allis and has been published by Boydell Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Literary Criticism categories.

Despite several recent monographs, editions and recordings devoted to the reassessment of British music in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, some negative perceptions still remain--particularly a sense that British composers in this period somehow lacked literary credentials. British Music and Literary Context counters this perception by showing that these composers displayed a real confidence and assurance in refiguring literary texts in their music. The book explores how a literary context might offer modern audiences and listeners a 'way in' to appreciate specific works that have traditionally been viewed as problematic. Each chapter of this interdisciplinary study juxtaposes a British composer with a particular literary counterpart or genre. Issues highlighted in the book include the vexed relationship between words and music, the refiguring of literary narratives as musical structures, and the ways in which musical settings or representations of literary texts might be seen as critical 'readings' of those texts. Anyone interested in nineteenth-century British music, literature and Victorian studies will enjoy this thought-provoking and perceptive book.
