Examination Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: The work analyzes the way Gilman and Chopin respectively deal with nature and gender in "Herland" and "The Awakening", as these subject matters are central to both works, and the issue of gender seems to superficially affiliate the works as both feminist works. The focuses are, firstly, on how they depict the different genders and portray their respective natures and, secondly, on what kind of relationship each of them devises between humans and nature, that is, the role they assign to nature in its different manifestations-its physical appearance and natural processes, as well as human's inner nature-in each work. Moreover, the thesis points out contrasts between the respective depictions and provides explanations for these by drawing on personal convictions of Chopin and Gilman, as these are the key to achieving a full understanding of each of the works and of the respective underlying motivations. Thus, some of the authors' differences in conviction are clarified, thereby distinguishing them from each other. The first section provides important background information concerning prevalent convictions about the nature of the different genders in Chopin's and Gilman's time, as well as where those convictions originated in and how they affected men's and women's respective roles in American society then. To be familiar with this historical and cultural background is essential for a proper understanding of both works, as it constitutes the background on which both authors drew for "Herland" and "The Awakening", and to which both works can be understood as a reaction, albeit in different ways. In two subsequent sections, an analysis of each of the works with regard to the conception of nature and gender follows, and the final section deals with the said contrasts.

Edna Pontellier`s death at the end of the novel is not the essential sense. Since the society of her time cannot allow such an "awakening" of individuality to take place, Edna is fated to die. Therefore death is a forgone conclusion. Given that Kate Chopin tried to paint the picture of a truly liberated, independent, and individual woman, she cannot let Edna go back to her conventional life, which would be the only alternative. Following the biography of Kate Chopin closely, the reader discovers many parrallels between Kate Chopin`s life and the character of Edna Pontellier. The novel does not, as some critics of Kate Chopin`s time have claimed, lack "authorial comment and judgement".1 Kate Chopin`s novel was meant as a judgement of the Creole society of her time. Therefore it is important to examine the characters and the events that are crucial for the development that leads to the tragic end of Edna Pontellier. Starting with her husband, Léonce Pontellier, whom she does not love, I will discuss in what way the main characters Adèle Ratignolle, Mademoiselle Reisz, Alcée Arobin and Robert Lebrun are responsible for Edna ́s "awakening".

But what precisely is the nature of Edna's awakening? Does the novel really convey a feminist tenor, and does Chopin succeed in exploring new cul¬tural and social options in the sphere of fiction? Three major aspects have to be analysed to il¬luminate this matter, namely adultery, the notion of contract and the question of a female iden¬tity, all of which are directly linked to the organization and stability of society in general and in American society by the end of the nineteenth century in particular. Considering the ubi¬quity of adultery - seen as a transgression against the marriage contract - in nineteenth-century novels, Tony Tanner postulates "relationships between a specific kind of sexual act, a specific kind of society, and a specific kind of narrative" (1979: 12), all of which here imply a defini¬tion of woman's role on a social scale. As far as The Awakening is concerned, however, the case is far from clear because society's ideological hegemony is significantly diminished, though at no point relinquished. It is proble¬matic to speak of Edna's sexual liberation and emancipation for two reasons: firstly, there are no restrictive measures or even social sanctions like ostracism, and secondly, the ending is too ambivalent to interpret it from an exclusively feminist perspective. Nevertheless, Showalter is certainly correct in asserting that "Chopin went boldly beyond the work of her precursors in writing about women's longing for sexual and personal emancipation"(1993: 170); contempo¬rary reviews and the reception history as a whole supply sufficient evidence of this as well as of the thesis that "Chopin calls into question the ideologies and assumptions about women's place articulated by leading thinkers of her time" (Bauer/ Lakritz 1988: 47). But the text is neither a tract nor a pamphlet; it is an aesthetically composed novel which works quite differ¬ently due to its fictional status. This paper tries to clarify the complex set of ideas and tech¬niques that operate on the fictional level and is, moreover, designed to show their social and cultural relevance in the context of Kate Chopin's epoch while taking into account several approaches to the text.

At this time of the year when the sun enters the sign of Aquarius, Kate Chopin saw the light of day. Forty-nine years later, in 1899, her novel The Awakening is published. The book, in which the protagonist Edna Pontellier rebels against the social conventions of the Victorian society whereby women were solely seen as property of their husbands and mothers of their children, causes outrage among the great majority of readers and critics in America. By challenging gender roles, Kate Chopin had entered virgin soil on a matter that was simple not to be questioned in Victorian society with its fixed rules. Edna Pontellier becomes an outsider by struggling to achieve independence, freedom and individuality for herself and her life. Chopin herself, not only by writing a novel like The Awakening, stood in many ways apart from the crowd, too. Her habits, point of views and appearance were unique and often provocative. Rebellion, independence and the pursuit of individuality are not only the central themes in The Awakening and in Kate Chopin's life but also the central motives assigned to the archetype of the Aquarius, the "water carrier." This term paper aims at providing an approach towards understanding Kate Chopin and Edna Pontellier by considering the influence of the sign of Aquarius and by examining to what extent its nature can be found in their lives as mothers, wives and human beings.
