Excerpt from Interstate Medical Journal, Vol. 15: January-December, 1908 A review of the immense amount of original literature produced by the prolific writers of this rapid age is entirely beyond the capabilities of any one man. To keep familiar with only the best work done in any one line taxes the limited time devoted entirely to this task of those men restricting themselves to special fields. Yet the absolute necessity of keeping abreast with medical progress is now, more than ever before, appreciated by the entire medical profession. These conditions have produced many publications covering the literature of a given time, in a more or less condensed or abstract form. Year books, issued quarterly or monthly, have attempted to supply the demands for this much de sired knowledge. Up to the present time, however, with the exception of the interstate, no medical journal has undertaken the burden of giving a systematized review of the literature as an annual number of its regular edition. The priority of these review numbers covering every cognate branch of medicine has been undisputed. In 1902 the interstate inaugurated this annual review, and the growing favor with which it has been received since that time, more than compensates for the continued efforts represented by each January number. The present number is the sixth annual review of medical progress issued by the inter state, and with its presentation the following editorial comment may not be amiss. Excerpt from Interstate Medical Journal, Vol. 13: January-December, 1906 Block1 attributes the fact that round ulcer of the stomach is found more frequently on the lesser curvature of the stomach than at the pylorus, to anatomical relations which he has observed in stomachs fixed and examined immediately after death. These portions of the stomach have the same appearance in' the dilated as in the contracted state, while the muscles of the other portion contract firmly and thus protect its mucous membrane from the action of the gastric juice. In the muscles of the newborn dying from gastro - enteritis are found ulcers which have originated from hemorrhagic erosions, and the epithelium seems to be seriously damaged through hemorrhages to the mucous membrane. Excerpt from Interstate Medical Journal, Vol. 16: January-December, 1909 Individuality is a force to - dav in nearly every walk of life except in medicine. There, knowledge counts for much, and rightly, but knowledge is not, nor can it ever be, the agent which alone is capable of combating certain symptoms which are the concomitants of nearly all the graver symptoms so beloved of all painstaking practitioners. What the im portance of the so-called lesser symptoms is, need not be contended here: but. That they have eluded the supposedly firm grasp of the doctor of to - day is made manifest to all of us by the'success of the multiplicity of religious healing societies. And they have eluded him because of his unwillingness to reckon them in the same category with all those salient points of disease inculcated into him in his college curriculum, or by the various text-books that have broadened his mind when he was a full fledged doctor. Whether or not a vagary that becomes a fixed idea should be met with sympathy or derision, depends on the mental bias. Of the'at tending doctor, and has so many ramifications as an argumentative proposition that only a very brave man would attempt to define his rea sons for assuming a staunch attitude in the matter. But even his strongest contention for his attitude towards peculiar mental manifesta tions, will not make the kindliest critic think better of him, unless the convincing fact obtains that by sheer force of his individuality there was a complete cessation of all untoward mental symptoms. Excerpt from Interstate Medical Journal, Vol. 8: A Monthly Magazine of Medicine and Surgery; January, 1901 A hundred years ago the science of medicine and surgery was in its swaddling clothes. There were men who practiced medicine in those days, as there were for ages before, but it is a serious question whether these men, in their efforts to deal with disease, did not do more harm than good. The system of blood-letting, and the practice of giving enormous doses of poisonous medicines without understanding the diseases to be combated, were measures which were extremely taxing on the robust constitutions of our forefathers; and it is certain that many of them were sent to untimely graves by the overzealous treatment which was then in vogue. The greatest strides which the past century witnessed in our special field were not in curative medicine, but in measures for the prevention of disease. At the beginning of the century the laws of sanitation were al most wholly unknown, and were universally disregarded. There were no adequate water-works or sewage systems in cities, and garbage and filth was allowed to accumulate as long as it did not interfere with traffic. Food and water were in consequence polluted. The direct relation of filth to disease was not understood. In consequence of this condition disease was rampant, and epidemics had full headway. This has all been changed - the principles of personal and public hygiene are well understood, and are constantly being put into more active practice.
