The book deals with initial interviews in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, suggesting the idea of special "indicators". These indicators relate to three main areas. Firstly, psychoanalytical understanding of initial interviews to evaluate the patient's suitability for a psychoanalytically based treatment, discussing the dynamics, aims and technique of the interview. Three areas to be explored in the interview are considered: psychopathological data; biographical data, and data arising from the interaction of the patient with the therapist in the interview itself. Secondly, part of the book is devoted to the definition and description of what the author calls "indicators" for the therapist to build a personality profile showing suitability for psychoanalytic treatment. The main theoretical bases of the book are Freud, Klein and Bion. A third part deals with the controversial issue of the differentiation between psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The specificity of psychoanalysis is defined in comparison with psychotherapy. A specific psychoanalytic method and setting may be created as well as a specific psychotherapeutic method and setting.

The book is a psychoanalytic understanding of psychosis as a particular organisation of the personality, based on 'psychotic personality' (Bion) and 'pathological organisations' (Steiner). The theoretical development is traced through Freud, Klein and Bion, along with contemporary Kleinian authors. An important role is granted to psychic pain as the cornerstone of psychopathology, and particularly to the psychotic patient's difficulties in dealing with it. Bion's distinction between "feeling psychic pain and suffering it" is considered an indicator when evaluating the patient's ability to cope with psychoanalytic treatment. The author's experience with a schizophrenic patient is related in detail, offering a view of the patient and her relationship with the analyst from various different angles, and showing how the psychoanalytic method can be used to treat psychosis.

Psychoanalytic Conversations written by Peter L. Rudnytsky and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with Psychology categories.

In this stunning addition to what has of late become a distinct genre of psychoanalytic literature, Peter Rudnytsky presents 10 substantive and provocative interviews with leading analysts, with theorists from allied fields, and with influential Freud critics. In conversations that Rudnytsky succeeds in making psychoanalytic both in form and in content, he guides his interlocutors to unforeseen reflections on the events and forces that shaped their lives, and on the personal and intellectual grounds of their beliefs and practices. Rudnytsky, a ranking academic scholar of psychoanalysis and the humanities, approaches his subjects with not only a highly attuned third ear but also a remarkable grasp of theoretical, historical, and clinical issues. When his interviewees turn from autobiographical narratives to matters of theory and clinical practice, Rudnytsky is clear about his own intellectual allegiance to the Independent tradition of object relations theory and his admiration for John Bowlby and attachment theory. His willingness to set forth his own point of view and occasionally to press a line of questioning infuses his exchanges with an energy, even passion, heretofore unknown in the analytic interview literature. Rudnytsky consistently emerges as a partner, even an analytic partner, in dialogues that meld discovery with self-discovery. To be sure, Psychoanalytic Conversations will find many clinical and scholarly readers among those who relish a good engrossing read. But it will have special appeal to students of analysis who share Rudnytsky's belief that if psychoanalysis is to remain vital in the new century, "it can only be by expanding its horizons and learning from those who have taken it to task."

Psychoanalysis has moved a long way from the techniques of classical psychoanalysis but these changes have not been understood or disseminated to the wider community. Even university scholars and students of psychology have an archetypal view of the original form of psychoanalysis and do not appreciate that, as in other fields such as surgery, major changes have occurred. This book aims to appeal to a very wide audience, including clinical practitioners, students of psychology and psychotherapy, the informed lay public, and those thinking about commencing an analysis. Although there have been a number of books that are interview based, none provides a strongly theoretical orientation to their interviews. Most focus on biographical details of the interviewees, with some theory discussed, but not in a focused way. These books are about the interviewees, whereas this one is about the psychoanalytic therapy as currently practised by master clinicians. The book commences with a detailed outline of the origins of psychoanalysis and an explanation of key terms, which are often misinterpreted. The second chapter outlines the changes that have occurred in theorizing and practice over the past 120 years with an outline of the key developments in theory and practice. Four major branches of psychotherapy are explored. The following chapters contain an interview with a practitioner working in one of these four branches of modern psychoanalysis - object relations, attachment informed psychotherapy, intensive short term dynamic psychotherapy, and relational and intersubjective theory. There follows a brief prologue which searchs for commonalities among these theoretical approaches, and a brief discussion of the differences. The book closes with a consideration of whether and how these differences translate into clinical practice.

This book argues that the squiggle game enables one in most cases to make contact with a child with particular ease. Often, if the child takes up the suggestion, an intense dialogue develops which gives insight into the inner situation, even in the cases where the child is consciously very reserved and in which the talk emerging from the squiggle game seems to be unproductive, the pictures offers a chance to start talking about precisely why he or she shows such reserve. The book explains the importance of setting up the psychotherapeutic interview situation to be playful in character, making it fun for both therapist and child. The squiggle game makes this easier because it generates a playful atmosphere which nevertheless has a very serious side to it. Including comprehensive examples from the authors practice this book is destined to become the definitive source for using Winnicottis squiggle game in clinical practice.
