Interzones is an innovative account of how the color line was drawn--and how it was crossed--in twentieth-century American cities. Kevin Mumford chronicles the role of vice districts in New York and Chicago as crucibles for the shaping of racial categories and racial inequalities. Focusing on Chicago's South Side and Levee districts, and Greenwich Village and Harlem in New York at the height of the Progressive era, Mumford traces the connections between the Great Migration, the commercialization of leisure, and the politics of reform and urban renewal. Interzones is the first book to examine in depth the combined effects on American culture of two major transformations: the migration north of southern blacks and the emergence of a new public consumer culture. Mumford writes an important chapter in Progressive-era history from the perspectives of its most marginalized and dispossessed citizens. Recreating the mixed-race underworlds of brothels and dance halls, and charting the history of a black-white sexual subculture, Mumford shows how fluid race relations were in these "interzones." From Jack Johnson and the "white slavery" scare of the 1910's to the growth of a vital gay subculture and the phenomenon of white slumming, he explores in provocative detail the connections between political reforms and public culture, racial prejudice and sexual taboo, the hardening of the color line and the geography of modern inner cities. The complicated links between race and sex, and reform and reaction, are vividly displayed in Mumford's look at a singular moment in the settling of American culture and society.

At the height of the Great Migration and the Progressive era, interracial sex districts began to appear in the urban American landscape. Interzones weaves the growth of cities and the development of commercialized leisure into an account of how the sexual color line was drawn - and how it was crossed. From black female prostitution to homosexual couples, from taxi dance halls to speakeasies, Kevin J. Mumford reconstructs the mixed-race underworld to reveal how these subcultures transformed not only race relations, but American culture as well.

Interzone portrays the development of Burroughs's mature writing style by presenting a selection of pieces from the mid-1950s. His outrageous tone of voice represents the exorcism of four decades of oppressive sexual and social conditioning. Burroughs's close observations of humanity - its ugliness and ignorance - invites the reader to dispense with their traditional notions of decorum, and taste the world as he sees it.

From its origins in American workwear, via west coast subcultures, extreme sports and subsequent commercialism, streetwear has become to fashion as hip-hop has to music: a global phenomenon. Incorporating cultural codes of dress, the best in graphic design, as well as exemplary brand-building the products not of corporate giants but cottage/tenement industries the leading streetwear brands have become influential beyond the sphere of fashion alone. Showcasing over 30 of the most exciting and importantly pioneering of streetwear brands, this book focuses not on the endless me-too labels, but those that have shaped the market since the late 1980s. Cult Streetwear tells the stories of the people behind the brands from entrepreneurs to graffiti writers, DJs to surf dudes to sneaker nuts, from LA to NYC, London to Berlin and Tokyo. It explores each brands cultural resonance, and explains why so many have gained a cult following while continuing to break new ground in a market with unlimited scope for innovation. It is the defining book on the subject and the only one on the market that explores the history of streetwear as well as it's present day status.

The works in this book were completed between 2005 and 2008. In creating the book, I was myself pleasantly surprised that while the foci, presentations and media changed over time, my interest in portraying people in relation to today's big-city world didn't. By the way, the title, "Interzone," was inspired by a rock band named Joy Division, whose music inspired me to capture the infinite faces of life during one's journey from the darkness and coldness of beginning.
